Full-face is definitely the most safe helmet. Myself, I follow the mantra of "I'm just a bicyclist with a higher cruising speed". I actually pedal my bike, and pedal it often. Sometimes I shut off engine and pedal. Full-face doesn't lend itself well to that lol
Agreed In fact I don't go any faster than I could hit without the motor (30). So I really think its dumb to ask for more than a bike helmet.

Having had a traumatic brain injury from being struck by lightning 17 years ago, I have no interest in another brain injury from concussion.

Saying you won't wear a helmet or seat belt because the government wants and requires you to is like saying you won't wear clothes in public places because it is required by the government that you not be nude. How about a drivers license, those are required .too.

I try to stay away from this arguement since it's a personal choice but here's my thoughts for what it's worth.

I still have large dents in my skull but I didn't expect to be run down by two cars that night while standing on a side street so I didn't wear my motorcycle helmet.
I got far luckier than I should have and survived without brain damage. No one knows why.

The real eye opener came when I was a volunteer fire fighter. If you had seen what I saw over the years you would never question helmets or seat belts. People died because they didn't use either. They would have lived, with injuries, but then someone on the police and fire department wouldn't have had to go to thier homes and tell thier family that they would never be coming home again.

Screaming, yelling why them, crying, frantic phone calls to other family members to tell them the tragic news, and the police and fire fighters being called every name under the sun and being hit in fits of rage like they were the reason that thier loved one died, would have been avoided by a simple act.

Then there were the ones that you put in the ambulance with injuries which you knew were going to condem them to a life of misery in a nursing home or extended care facility. Alive in a dead or damaged body that they could never escape.

It really is your decision but stop and think how many people that decision will effect other than yourself.

Steve.

Very well said, Steve.
Very well said.

I too am a survivor of a no helmet crash. I was a passenger, not the operator.
I am very grateful every day to be able to do what I can do.
I could have been dead at age 15.

Most helmets come with visors, but they are usually pretty weak. You can make a visor and attach it to your helmet with zip ties or velcro or double-sided tape.

Check out Bern helmets. ($35-100, really comfortable, top shelf helmets. Some have cold-weather inserts with ear flaps)

hard visor

soft visor
I have made my own knockoff of this by using the bill off a lost-and-found ball cap and securing it with black zip ties.

Also, there are aftermarket visors like this: $10 ! fits on skate helmets that go for about $15 at Walmart http://kk.org/wp-content/archiveimages/NRS Helmet Visor.jpeg

A lot of atv/motorcycle helmets can be had for $40-100, with visors, full face protection, noise protection, and maybe even shades. A lot of half helmets come with big plastic face shields, tinted in various shades.

I wear my bicycle helmet when I go to the doc's office, but usually wear a baseball cap.
...lotta glare around these parts and the visor is something I can't get by without anymore.

I voted " I wear it most of the time" because I admit I don't wear one sometimes such as riding on grassy fields or dirt roads when I'm going fishing, and don't wear it when I'm mowing the yard (I built a mower from an old kid trailer), which I pull in the granny gears at maybe 4 mph.

I tend to wear a foam bicycle helmet ($15-20 off-the-shelf stuff), when I am expecting to pedal some or use the bike as a pedal bike.

Sometimes for riding in the rain or in downtown Dallas I will wear a FF MC helmet.

Bike helmets have come a long way. For about $15, there are plenty of skate helmets that go way around the ears and back of head, and don't mash like a packing peanut. For around $40 there are Bern helmets, really classy hard-shell helmets with hat-brims and optional winter liners. Good stuff! You won't believe how comfortable (and not heavy) they are!

I even got my kid a helmet (she's 2) so she can be "just like daddy" and she likes to wear the little pink helmet with rabbits on it already. I'm hoping to get her started early, so she won't say "helmets are for dorks" or something. Oh well. I'd rather be a "dork" on a bicycle than a "dork" sitting in front of a TV all the time like a bunch of cagers.

Agreed In fact I don't go any faster than I could hit without the motor (30). So I really think its dumb to ask for more than a bike helmet.

Every time I'm gonna use my bike! I've seen and heard from news that there are many road accidents involving motorbikes and the fatal ones are mostly because of not wearing helmet. Safety always comes first.

To each his own, as for me, - I used to wear no helmet on short testing/round the block runs but Having a DOT approved helmet on when I was taking a longer 20 mile ride saved my life and I will never ride without one again. It's like the doctor said "Your legs we can rebuild, your brain.. not so much"

I read your story and it makes me cringe.
I wish you all the best in your recovery.

Was your DOT an open face? 1/2 helmet? Full face?

We are presently allowing DOT open face and 1/2 helmet at the races
and I am seriously considering having full face helmets be the new standard.

A full face Snell Shoei helmet saved me from extensive facial restoration or
worse in a 60? mph face plant crash. A insignificant knee scar was the only
other injury due to a Aerostich jacket, good boots, but jeans just don't cut
it when you are sliding down the asphalt.

Thanks - for the well wishes, I'm getting better.

It was 1/2 but my bike was only doing about 20.. at 60 on a track, I would def wear full face.

Authorities in our city are pursuing riders who are not wearing their helmets. We have a law in our city to prohibiting non wearing of helmets.

The fastest riders are hitting low 50's with most in the 40's.

On go kart tracks crashes and sliding out happens on fairly
slow turns so track riding really is much safer than on the street.
The sad part for me is I have shifter bikes that could compete well in these races but along with my eyesight and reflex s I have lost my balls too.

I guess that's what I get for running balls to wall with no regard for safety when I was young. My body reminding me of every foolish wreck I have had every morning and before I go to bed pretty took the wind out of my sails.

I know the races are fun, I was at the Tucson race a couple of years back and it is fun just to attend but I really wouldn't go if I didn't tote along a bike, and I couldn't tote along and bike and not ride, you get what I mean hehehe ;-}

Have fun guys and ride safe.

I got three helmets,, but I hardly ever wear a helmet when I'm riding around town but if you do any organized sport or competition like a triatholon or duatholon you can't participate without one!!!
