Finished my front caliper mount and as usual got irritated at the appearance of my mig welds. They're absolutely functional. Nothing wrong with them at all. Back in my stockcar days I used to test them on concrete walls! I just don't like the way they look and until I get a tig welder AND learn how to use it I ain't gonna be happy. A well executed tig weld is my kinda jewelry.

So I broke out with the bondo and now it looks too big again!

I've got a chunk of aluminum up on the lathe for a rear hub and I'm needing some advice on what to use for a rear sprocket before I can finish it. What I like are made by JT Sprockets for small motorcycles. C49 high carbon steel and a very reasonable price are 2 of the reasons why. Something like this;

Only problem is they don't make anything smaller than a 1/4" wide 420 pitch, which seems like a bit of overkill for a 49cc Chinese tool motor. Altho we shouldn't pretend I haven't done that before ...

With a lathe and the ability to make an accurate bolt circle I can use just about anything. Any suggestions?

Yep! And is cheep at farm stores, I am thinking 36 tooth is to high gear for 49 cc, don’t really know as don’t have one, just going by what I have read through the years. Hate to see you got through all theat work then have to change. .......Curt

Curt & Norms advice is worth listening to, they've been doing this a long time.

I just changed to a 36 tooth on my 66cc motor but it's been modified and produces double the output of a stock kit motor. If you have a lot of hills prepare to pedal a lot and from dead stops as well. If your commuting & can hold your speed most of the time then 36 tooth might be worth some pedal assist. So it's up to you & what you need or just want to experiment with FOG....have fun!

Thanx guys and that's good enough advice for me! JT Sprockets and a #41 chain it is.

Need to check size availability vs the various mounting patterns 1st but like VMB suggested I'll be needin' a jackshaft which'll give me a lotta gearing options anyway.

Unlike a China Girl this little tool motor I'm using doesn't have any internal gear reduction. I'm working right off the end of the crankshaft mounted clutch which means I get to confuse myself with 2 ratios!

FWIW, I was finally able to get up close and personal with a CG at the bike races and found they have 20 teeth on the crank gear and 82 on the clutch gear for a 4.1 internal reduction at the countershaft. Assuming a 10T countershaft gear and a 40T rear that's 4.1 for an overall ratio of 16.4 to 1. I'll be looking to start somewhere in that neighborhood and confuse myself until I get to what works best.

A necessary spacer to go between the bearings. It started life as a piece of stainless 7/8" barstock.

It's all about overkill.

Next up is another piece of stainless to thread on the end of the hub and mount a brake rotor. Keeps me busy ...
