I cut the rear triangle to clear the sheave. I will finish welding it with my brothers gas mig welder, and blend in those joins a lot better.... as well as the engine mounts etc, when i know everything is where it should be....

The last picture from looking at the bike with the garage door in background shows how close the lineup is for the clutch pulley and the sheave with one belt, but not quite.

So yea, you will get a jack shaft to fix that.

That also enables you to do more gearing down with the extra pulleys. You could then when not racing, get deep knobby tires and go on trails with massive gear down.

Go flying off top angle of hills in the woods, because you have at least front suspension!!!

Yeah i just need to find a 5/8 shaft and ill make the jackshaft.....i dont know about off road, i think ill stick to the tarmac thanks lol.

I made a video of the bike running with a mock up tank. I know i need to tighten the exhaust. In the video i take it to about 3/4 throttle.

I can't wait to see this going dude,

I love the sound of these motors, really nice for a single pot, don't ya think?

Can it idle a bit lower? i had mine so it was almost hitting and missing!

Time to work out the ratios and fit the jack shaft, there is a really good site that gets ratios from pulley diameters i think, don't know for sure.

Keep up the awesome work bro, I've shown a few of my friends some pictures of your bike, and they think its so cool dude, really appreciate the attention to detail.

Cheers, Cam.

I checked out the video and saw that muffler in action. That's home made?

How much horse power does that engine get?

I saw something about porting and getting a little more with some kind of fuel air mix at intake to save in reservoir while the intake valve shuts. When it reopens again the reservoir of already vaporized fuel gets the intake resupplied faster and a little more horse power.

You don’t add but a small bottle with line. This just a thought.

But please, hey, no laughing gas (N2O) please, as you should not melt that nice engine as it is working now!

Wow,
I've not been able to access the site in some time and just now got connected. What great progress you've made! I'm supposed to be working on my friend's bike and instead have just blown the last hour staring at your awesome build. You guys are getting my hopes up that there's a way to rig up the kick start. As Fasteddy said, the Indian is getting some surgery done to make room for the engine so it can sit more upright and give better room for the intake and exhaust manifolds. I'm hoping it will be done at the end of the week... then engine mounts, then infinity and beyond.

Yeah the it could have idled lower but i didnt want it stalling (it did so twice before this filming) so i just turned the throttle up a little. I havent really played with the engine tune. I will get to that when its going.

And YEAH i love the sound of these motors too.

The muffler is the stock exhaust that came with the motor.... not sure about the horsepower.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more SB, i love your bike and cant wait to see it with the Villiers powering it. Not to mention share some ideas of how to do it.

I might go buy some pulleys for my jackshaft. I'm thinking I'll put another 100mm or 4" pulley on the jackshaft primary drive. To lower the ratio (faster acceleration) do I put a smaller or bigger pulley on the secondary drive jackshaft? Also how big should my idler pulley be? About 50mm or 2"?????

2 times 3.14 (Pie or however it is spelled in Greek) = circumference

*****apple pie… mmmm*****

Little pulley in front, big one on back.
Then across jackshaft and again little pulley in front, big one on back.

The Jackshaft itself in the middle does nothing just transfers rotation.

Each little to big gears down. Multiply the both to get the result.

Anyway like to see what you’re going to decide on.

About the idler pulley I'm not sure it makes that much difference? Someone who built this better to ask.

One thing is for sure. I measured the inside length for a v-belt on my motor bike and use fine wire down in the crevice of the pulleys to transfer to measuring tape.

I had the motor on the mount all the way back to make the shortest measurement. When the belt stretches some as normal I wanted to be able to take up slack.

Here is the clincher. When I gave the measurements and got the guy to order over the phone, he negated to tell me that the belt specifications on length were for the outside of the belt. I measured the inside!

I think if I remember then it was too short, then I thought I also have adjustment on the jack shaft, but that would just throw the whole idea of having adjustment when the v-belt and chain (I have both) stretch due to age.

A calculator to do the conversion I may have seen online for inner to outer belt equivalents, but never got the idea of how to use it.

I just went into an auto supply store with the motor bike, and went behind the counter in back, the guy there allowed me to, I asked. I kept trying on various belts and got what I needed.

I’m not using a sheave, so I not sure what kind of belt is used, but I just felt that you get the right length and not have to return stuff. Heck remember when one of that Mars Landing went awry due to units of measure differences!

Here is one more thought. In design of the idler pulley you may want to make it possible to have some range of adjustment when engaged, so that when the belt stretches it can go a while longer if it is not yet so worn and frayed.

It is already inherent of the idler pulley anyway that I think you can do that easily.

Measure Twice, Theres a gear calculator at the top of "DIY Builds" and is easy to use.

As far as my idler pulley, i guess it has to be small enough to fit in between the primary drive pulleys, but not too small or it will do too many rpms and not last as long. Dont know if there is anything else to consider.

I will get my belts and pulleys from the shop where i got the front pulley, he already said i could return any i cannot use.

And yes the clutcharm has numerous holes to mount the idler pulley, i will probably drill an off centre hole between the last 2 holes so there will be 3 or more holes for adjustment.

I had this petcock and some old copper piping that was with an old stationary engine i got, i thought id use it on this project...

But now i have thought about it, im wondering if its big enough diam tubing. It appears to be about 4-5mm (1/8 maybe???). Im not sure what diam tubing im meant to be running.... Do you guys know?

Id rather use the old looking copper tube i have but its clogged up... could i soak it in something to clear it..... probably better to get a new bit and age it.

I went to the plumbing supplies to get some copper tubing, but they dont deal in that size and referred me to a fefrigeration suppliers. Is that where you guys get your copper tubing?

The old piece i had was just long enough to mock up a trial bend.... what do you guys think? If anyone has a better idea id love to hear it. I think this looks alright?

I wanted to use this fuel filter, but unfortunately theres nowhere to put it if i run this exhaust...

While looking on EBay i came across these so called "Sturmey Archer" gearboxes. Unfortunately they are being sold from a large EBay seller that may or may not know anything about them, so whether they are sturmey archer or not who knows. I wonder if they would be suitable for these villiers motors. I still have 2 more motors so im planning on building at least 2 more Villiers MB in the future, and how cool would one of these be in a build.....

I dont know how to do a link properly so just cut and paste thes ebay numbers, i think that works.... just dont go buying them all under my nose, lol, if usable theres enough for all of us....well 3 of us anyway :) or maybe they are overkill....

I decided on my pulley sizes and will buy them tommorrow. I think i read you should aim for a reduction of 8:1. My engine pulley is 100mm (4"), so if i run a 125mm (5") pulley on the rear primary, and a 75mm (3") pulley on the secondary drive, the rear sheave/rim is 450mm (17.7") and give me a reduction of 7.50:1 and if we work on the 3000rpm we heard about it will give me 20.9mph. Good enough for me and if it revs harder ill be going faster.

This is my second build and first DIY build so if this gear ratio doesnt sound right id appreciate any advice on this.

Now that's cool, what a neat find - i wonder what they are off?

I have a sturmey archer 3 speed rear wheel hub on mine, didn't even know they made these boxes!

Your bike looks awesome dude, once you get a longer piece of copper pipe and make the straight piece a little more flowy i think the whole thing is going to look super sexy

Keep up the awesome work!

Cheers, Cam.

Cool huh? Ive got no idea what they are off, i presume early motorcycles. Wonder if they would work? Probably heavy though!

If no-one bids they are cheap i think. I had a quick look on web sites and i think i seen one similar for 250 pounds

Well i went and bought the goodies to make my jackshaft. I bought 2 pillow bearings (not like the ones i wanted and seen used on here, but ill make em work), keyway shaft stock, 2 bearings to press into a idler pulley i need to find or have made (it will be the same size as the plstic chain guide in pic, just wider) and 2 x 5/8 pulleys.

I planned on using a 5" and 2 3/4 pulleys on the jackshaft to give me my 8:1 reduction (if this isnt the right reduction ratio please let me know guys). And i wanted the rear to match the 4" front pulley so i could drill it the same, but unfortunately when these pulleys go from 4" to 5" the design changes, i ummed and arred and just figured id learn to live with it..... well i hate it so when i get a chance i will swap the pulleys with the shop for a 4" and 2" pulleys. That way the 2 primary pulleys will be identical and drilled the same. Why didnt i think of that when i was there ....... oh well!!!!!

OH and i nearly died when i got the bill...... $113......... Those pillow bearings are really dear.......Oh well gotta be done i guess

Harry,
About your idler pulley. Silverbear asked me to tell you to first find a skate board wheel, new or used.
Get a bolt that will pass through the hole of the wheel and cut the head off it.
On the threaded end put a nut , a large washer, the wheel, another large washer and a nut to clamp it all together.
Put the cut off end in a drill and using a coarse file cut a channel in the wheel as it spins.

Hope this helps.
It's a nice looking build.

Steve.
