SMALL FRAME!!! I've already bought the thing! 1st BUILD HELP :(

So I planned on whacking a 2 stroke engine kit from eBay onto a push bike and couldnt find any decent hybrid bikes in my area. I walked into a well known local bike shop and fell in love with one recommended by the owner - A Python Quantom 8000 Men's hybrid bike. I fell in love and purchased on the spot...

Coming home, I realised quickly that It's unlikely ANY motor would fit the damn thing Before I go ahead and purchase a motor, will anything fit?

The bike is an 18 inch frame. Measuring from the inside of the frame from handlebars to seat is around 17 inches. From the cenre of the pedal to seat is 14 inches. From the centre of the pedal to the handlebar is 19 inches in the frame. It has 700c wheels.

I'm a complete noob but I really, desperately need this bike to run. I have a long commute to work, have struggled to find a job for a long time and public transport in my area is terrible. I would really appreciate some help, and even recommendations on what to buy. I'm no expert so I want a simple, straightforward build with as little money as possible. I dont mind doing a little research and work but I need to be back on the road quickly (The 2 stroke 80cc kits seem to retail around £100, so this is what I was looking to spend, ideally). I have included a picture of my bike model, it is the 18inch version as I mentioned. I have also included a photo of the kit I was looking to buy.

One of the side Spencer have a diagram of a engine measurements, cut one out of cardboard see if it will fit.Think it's been done before, use the search on top ............Curt

I typed in Spencer and Diagram in the search and cant seem to locate it. I found a diagram on Youtube but that was for a 4 stroke and it was way wayyy too big for my frame. Feeling like this isnt gonna happen If you could send me a link and any recommendations I would appreciate it! And thank you for responding so quickly too.

Unfortunately, you didn't do your homework BEFORE purchasing a bike... That's a really bad choice for trying to install a engine on!

I suggest trying to return it where you bought it (even if you have to take a small loss), & then buy a bike that's better suited to having a engine in it... (like a beach cruiser).


*edit* Another important thing to look for when buying a bike to motorized is how many spokes the rear wheel has!!
Your wheel needs to have 36 spokes in order to install the drive sprocket... (the wheel on the bike you have now only has 32 spokes).

I dont mean to be "that guy" but I have seen a couple vids on youtube of people mounting these things on BMX's. I found a thread on a BMX forum and even photos of custom builds, albeit by engineers! Is there no way of mounting it outside of the inner frame?

Okay, so i've found a tonne of modded BMX's, mainly by engineers or experts though. This one seems straightforward from what I can see, please check out the video. The guy seems to have mounted the engine underneath the seat and it sits pretty well. If I cant mount it to this, ill probably just use it as a push bike

YAY! the two stoke template fits, albeit very tightly. Opinons, guys? Im stupid for spending so much on a light hybrid bike when this thing will probably add 10-15 kg anyway but its pretty much done, now. Check out the photos of the template and frame and let me know what you all think?

I dunno Phudd. That angle looks pretty extreme compared to the video. Your carb might wind up at a 45 degree angle. And then there's the problem of a 32 spoke rear wheel.

On the bright side pedaling is good exercise ....

I read something about a different spoke bracket thing which solves that problem so I'm not too concerned about the lack of spokes. I agree about the exercise which is why I want to keep it, its just a shame as the bike shop had a great discounted road bike but the guy recommended this one if I was mounting an engine as the frame is more sturdy and the wheels are thicker so they could handle the extra torque better. Does the angle make a huge difference? I'm still researching this a little and dont want to annoy anybody if its too difficult.

i buy bikes and cut them up and weld together new bikes. new, used, idc, my torch eats 'em all. then my frankenstein powers kick in and i weld them into something new tht a motor will fit in. just make sure your wheels are 36h, or you have an adapter, and you can make almost any bike work with a angle grinder, welder and torch.

I'm glad to hear there is still hope haha. I want to avoid having to make any cuts with an angle grinder and I definitely cant weld - this looks like its turning into a very expensive project when I could just buy an actual motorbike! I was hoping I could cram the engine in and the angle could be adjusted or set properly with the chain tensioner and modifying the chain guard. I wish I just picked up a cheap used mountain bike for less than half the price, if I knew this was going to happen I would have.

Carbs don't have to be level to work. Some amount of angle is fine but at some point the pilot jet's gonna go underwater. Maybe 20-25 degrees?

A modified intake would fix this. The motor itself is not gonna care.

to add to this quote,

just make a stock intake into a modified one if the engine will fit but the carb is off level. radiator hose will work for a shirt while till you can have someone weld one up. the carb will work fine if slightly off level, we do ride up hills. to far and it will affect the air/fuel mixture, flooding it or causing it to run lean, or just flat out leaking because the float can't shut the fuel flow off. you can run the motor upside down it if you want, just the carb has to be pointing up.
