1911 Super
Interesting to note - while this sporty little cyclecar had an impressive 998cc engine, in actuality it was only producing about 9.3hp for max speed of 45mph/70kph... not so very different then some motorized racing bicycles, displacement notwithstanding lol
Hello BAW,
This SUPER is really super cyclecar! Only strange thing (or one of many?) is position of gasoline tank just infront of passneger and above his leggs...
Examples in museum look better than any of them in its period? Anyway, it looked better and was constructed better then more famous Bedelia, that could be seen on one of attched photos...
Could be inspiration for pedal powered, tandem-seats velocar?

Hello Zoran

The plywood frame isn't finished yet. My velocar has still the steel frame under the plywood body.
Measurements:

Width: 122cm/48inches
Height: 80cm/32inches (body)
115cm/45inches (soft top)
Wheelbase: 210cm/84inches
Weight: 80kg

Kai
Hello Kai,
Thank you on details about your nice Velocar!
It seems to me that you used squere metal tubes of 3 cm x 3 cm, or maybe somehting bigger?

Hello

Moto-klassika: I used 40mm square tube with 1,5mm wall thickness and had to weld in additional stiffeners afterwards.
This picture is now two years old.
The naked construction shown here weights around 50kg.

Todays finds from a cruiser workshop in Hannover:
A threewheeler velocar

And a four wheeled velocar with a dystopic style body

The under frame seems to be derivated from Harald Winkler's Asphalttretboot, except it has four wheels.

Love the fuzzy dice and the rabbit radiator cap mascot. A very nice wee velocar :)

The Piratecyclex Velomobil is interesting and it looks like the bodyshell is made from black Coroplast sheets.

My parents in law live near Hannover, just 45km away.
Maybe I should meet these guys, during the next family visit.

PirateCyclex Description:
"The first Piratecyclex velomobile is ready.
It`s a two person pedal car with a classic Hot Rod metal (alum) body.
With a length of 2,40m and a weight of 100kg these Velocar is a real eye-catcher.
It has three gears and hydralic Magura brakes.
The pedal car is roadworthy by having the required lights and reflectors."

I like the aggresive grille, but I have no idea, how a person under 1,70 is able to look over this massive "engine cowling"
Maybe looking through the grille instead, seems possible.

Don't know if this fits here but its right up my ally being an old flier. Love the lack of need to worry about a drive train, just brakes. Also looks to be a fabric body which I really love. I believe I would have the windshiled tilt at the bottom for summer use, theres already a big fan running out front!

Kai,
Thank you on information!
Did I see weel that your chassis doesn't have any suspension, or maybe has just at rear? Is it flexible - twisting over wavy terrain?

My HPV-quadricycle has 52 kg and is build of two MTB simply connected togather, that is some 16 kg more then bicycles alone...
I still didn't testted it, so do not know how well/bad it would be for driving around, with just me pedalling, than stability and road-hollding...

This seems to be advertisement but the car looks great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=T2Tc8-ii-30

According to the round shape and lots of these cars in the video I assuming a fiberglass shell.
... those "AuburnJr-speedsters" look magnificient and are professionally designed and constructed (probably some of my compatriots according to name MILAN)... there is excellent video with computer presentation of construction... than, a variant with full-electric power, like golf-karts... all of them must be quite expensive? beside, I prefer style of classic velocars if I build velocar, not replica of famous luxurious/sport automobile... but, those are magnificient!

Kai,
This 3-wheel velocar is well done and much better looking then "piratecycle". I wonder if it is (only) motor powered as later models of Mochett motorised velocars?

This "piratecycle" looks quite strange for my taste, looking as deformed under strong panic-brakeing on traffic lights? or similar to veteran racing cars on old b/w photos with entire body angled forward. I am not sure if that was some photo-trick or result of antic photo-camera work?
However, it has interesting chassis, at least for some of my future plans, if decide to modified present HPV-quadricycle in-to velocar. One of the issues would be using similar front suspension/steering: front forks of my MTBs used for qudricycle.

In any case, simpler body then either of those, becuase of cost and my working art.

P.S.: Forgot to say that it seems to me that "AuburnJr" has just one brake on left rear wheel - and, not any kind of speed change? If so, quite strange for so heavy vehicle?

Hello Anne,

I knew that the car looked familiar. In it's day I'm sure that the car was a lot of money at 20 Pounds Sterling for the materials. I can't help but wonder what a 350cc Blackburn engine would be worth today if you could find one.

Steve.

Hello Kai,

Thank you for posting the velocars. Stan's video is very well done and the velocar in it is great. When I build mine It will have to have 2 seats and I'll need to get a dog.

Pirate Cyclex's velocar shows the builders artistic side very well. I agree that looking over the hood would be very hard to do indeed unless your tall. Maybe he wanted to copy the cars of the 1920's and the 1930's when they seemed to feel that a huge hood was necessary.

I very much like your build. A good solid frame and the bracing of the frame didn't add much weight but gave you maximum strength and rigidity.

The seats must be extremely comfortable with the way they follow the shape of a persons back. Looking forward to seeing more of this build and your next one as it takes form.

Steve.

I think you'd need to have deep pockets to buy a 350 Blackburn engine in running condition these days Steve.

Another picture of Stan's Velocar, it's a real little sweetie :D
