Regarding the slower riders. As a novice racer I knew enough to stay aware of the guys passing me and clear the fast line for them once the guys lapping me started coming through. Once you are lapped, get outta the way!

But getting clear of the pack in the first lap is your problem, Lining up the fast riders two by two seemed to help in Tucson. Looked to me in the vid like you all went from one row in this race. Gotta make turn one interesting, but maybe by the main event lining up two by two based on the heat results should be done.

Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself!

The <11hp and the mid sized gas classes were run together and I had suggested that the bigger, faster bikes get the front row after the first heat race. It didn't happen and I started in the second row all but one race I believe. No big I guess, blew past the front row on nearly every take-off. My second heat race was the one I started 1/4 lap behind the pack and played catch-up making my way to the top five in the finish.

You are spot-on Dogman in your thinking.....makes perfect sense.

...I would hate to see somebody get eliminated from the heat races and not be able to race the main especially if they travel from another state to race one of these events. I know I would be PO.....
that's a fact of life in any competition.

the whole purpose of the heat races are to eliminate the slower riders, and letting the faster ones battle it out.

if everyone gets to ride the finals, it's almost like little league, where everyone gets to play, and everyone gets a trophy, no matter how (un)talented they are, so no one's feelings get hurt.

when i raced BMX as a little kid, if i didn't make the finals because i crashed, or because i was too slow, or whatever reason, yeah, i was mad, but it made me want to get better for the next race. that's what it's all about. i've traveled all over the country for skateboard contests, too, and most of the time i was up there in the main event, but sometimes i was hurt, crashed, or just plain got beat. it happens.

with the amount of track time any rider can get, with practice and heat races, it's still fun for everyone. realistically, a rider knows whether he's a contender or not. if you've got a 15mph cruiser with apehangers and raccoon tails on your sissybar, you know you aren't gonna be standing on the podium at the end of the race. and the sad fact is you have no business being in main event. all you are is a moving traffic cone on the track, or worse, a speed bump.

not trying to be nasty, but it's a race. it's not a weekend ride at the beach with your friends.

all that being said, i'm not trying to discourage anyone to stay home, or stay off the track if they're too slow, by all means, come down, ride around, have some fun, but when the green flag drops, remember, it's a race, and everyone just turned into animals, and for the next half hour, it's every man for themselves. all my friends i had so much fun with in the pits, have now become my bitter enemies for the next 15 laps.

2-stoke class (plus the three 4-stroke bikes) on the starting line. This made for exiting racing!

blog.nashmoto.com

Plus 1 E-bike... me. I missed out on the 2nd ebike heat because of it being moved up and couldn't get safety gear on in time so Neil was nice enough to let me run in this group. I started dead last and let everyone get to the 1st corner before going and then tried to stay out of everyones way and out of their lines since I was just a guest in the race. Because I took it easier it's also the only race I didn't crash out of! Went from 25th place to finishing 7th I think. I was the guy on the really tiny looking short wheel base full suspension BMX.

This was my favorite race by far because I actually finished LOL. This was my first time ever racing anything on two wheels on a race track and it was sooo much fun.

I also wanted to add that some of the gas bikes are damn sexy looking. Real shame cops hassle you guys.

Heres some of the prizes that I won for my 1st place win in the 2 stroke class. From one of the sponsors, Manic Mechanic, the radial 2 stroke head and a custom feul tank from Dave Rust, 'Custom Fabrication' who just walked up and gave it to me. thanks I really appreciate it and look forward to many events in the future. -magrider-

First, we had a great time and met a lot of nice people and saw very interesting bikes!
As stressed out as Neil was, he did an excellent job organizing and managing
this event!

We understood this "race" more as a get together of like minded people
who want to have fun and NOT as a RACE!!!!

It seems to us that the majority of the bikers at this event had the same
understanding of the purpose of this event! (just take a look at the bikes)

Now, as for the "serious racers of motorized bicycles" (which in itself is an oxymoron LOL) it will be rather expensive for you 5 ???? guys to finance an event like this all by yourselfe!

We did not drive 1000 miles and spend $ 400 in gas to be told to take our ball
and go home after 5 laps!

If one would be serious about racing you would not putt putt along on a little
bicycle with a stationary engine in it!!!

We think an event like this is to promote motorized bicycles to all groups of
people and the main purpose is to have fun!!!

If you turn this event into a rich boy race with attitude to match you will
kill it!

We promise you that!

P.S. a "serious racer" should be able to overtake slower drivers with ease
and deal with traffic conditions, it's part of the challenge!

I could not have said it better my friend!

The "slow" guys are just as important to the event and
without them there would be no race.

Everyone coming will get two 5 lap heats and a 12 lap final.

True the slower riders will not get into the Ultimate race
and will not win bragging rights or prizes but I am sure they
will have just as much fun as the riders that did.

Of course there are improvements to be made with some of
ways the race went like the starting grid. It was supposed to
be 3 lines of bikes but that needs a few of you to step up and
help on the day.

I am renaming the event to SoCal FUN Motor Bicycle Racing! :D

i agree, these are supposed to be fun events. and for the most part, i think everyone had a good time, even those that are complaining.

too bad the track is out in the middle of nowhere, it'd be great to have an event where we could have a group ride, then a race.

as far as being a "serious" racer, i gotta admit, i am one. it may be a glorified moped, but the feeling is the same. i've raced BMX bikes, drove autocross, slalom, drags and solo 2 in an old '75 honda civic (don't laugh, it would 1/4 mile in 11.5, turn 1.2G's on a skidpad, and topped out at 140mph...:)) and had a '96 impala ss that would go 180, and competed as an amateur and a professional skateboarder for my entire childhood.

some of us are just more competitive than others. i'll probably be racing barstools and lawnmowers when i turn grey (er.)

if someone's not a serious racer, there's still plenty of track time for everyone. there was a 1.5-2 hour lunch with only 5 or 6 people on the track. it woulda been a perfect time to organize some grudge matches with friends, or just cruise around. or, like most people did, hang out, check out all the bikes, and BS with new friends.

either way, it was fun event, and you can't please all the people all the time.

i'd love to see the racing aspect get more serious, and judging from the differences of the willow springs race compared to this one, it is. at willow, there were 2 fast four strokes, a lot more cruisers and choppers, and scotto on a tandem, fer crissakes...:)

now we got people going nuts and building motorcycles with pedals, that are pretty much illegal and impractical for everyday use, people who've spent a ton of money and time modifying a "cheap" chinese 2 stroke, temperature sensors, rev counters, racing leathers, and more Maxxis Hookworms ever seen in one place.

and i bet the next race will be even crazier.

and even more fun for everyone.
