Friction Drives

Deacon Had Message Almost Finished And Hit A Wrong Key!!:( The Complete Assembly Pivots On The Seatpost.the Motor Is In Front Of Seat Post And Jackshaft Is Behind. Like In Sick Bikes Kit. When You Squeeze The Hand Clutch Lever In It Pulls The Drive Roller Up And Away From Rear Tire. At The Same Time The Motor Tilts Down. When You Pedddle The Bike You Let Off With The Clutch Lever And The Roller Contacts The Rear Tire And Hopefully As The Say In Nas Sau= We Have Ignition !! There Is No Centrifical Clutch. When You Need To Stop Squeeze Clutch Lever. It Has A Spring To Hold Tension On The Wheel (as You Often Do). The Gas Tank Is A Storage Device. I `m Thinking Of Putting A China Bike Gas Tank There Instead, If I Ride It Much. It Has A Small Plastic Tank By Motor. I Better Send This Before My Big Finners Hit The Erase Button Again Ron^5

So if we can replace the wheel with something about the same size you might be able to pump some carb cleaner down the gas line and have it running again. The last two WWs I had that wouldn't start just needed the carb cleaner pulled through them.

If it is a true wheel I bet you can come up with something solid metal so it won't wear out again.

Since it is a gravity clutch you really shouldn't have any problems. Get your camera going I'm dying to see how it is mounted.

Ron, what diameter roller is on your pocket bike engine? I want to mount my 10hp(so said the seller) modified pb engine onto my cruiser. The bike has a 1.5" roller, and I have a 1.375" and a 1.125" on hand.

Myron

5-7 I HAVE 1.25" ROLLER (1 1/4") ON 26" BICYCLE WITH 49CC POCKET BIKE ENGINE. I HAVE A 2" DIA BY 2" WIDE FLAT BELT DRIVE PULLEY COMING (1/2" BORE) FOR THE ZIPCYCLE. I SHOULD TRY THAT ON THE 49CC FIRST. I THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR FUEL MILAGE. IT MAY BE TOO MUCH OF AN INCREASE THOUGH. THE ZIPCYCLE HAD A 2 1/4" DRIVE ROLLER AS NEAR AS I CAN FIGURE. THE ZIP IS ONLY 25CC BUT RUNS THE JACK SHAFT FOR GEAR REDUCTION. IF THAT MOTOR YOU JUST BOUGHT HAS THAT KIND OF POWER, I DON`T KNOW WHERE TO START 3" DRIVE ROLLER ???:-{ DEACON, I HAVE THE PARTS FOR ZIP ON THE WAY. I WANT TO GET AT THE PIC`S, I KNOW IT ADDS MUCH TO THE POSTS. NEED TO GET MY HEAD SET RITE, BEEN A BIT BUSY LATELY WITH THE TREE SERVICE !! THANKS FOR THE INTEREST.(^) RON :ride:

I am running a 1inch bmx axle peg that is cross cut like a big ole rasp on a 25cc leaf blower motor at the moment. For some reason it runs better than my 31cc did with a smooth 1 roller... I'm beginning to wonder if it isnt as much about tension and surface as size that really matters. This 25cc hums since I can't throttle back on it. Darn thing just flies wide open way to scary for me. I am going to try to put a carb with a throttle on that engine, It is just too darn scary running wide open all the time.

smaller rollers give you more power to the wheel. larger rollers give you more speed. i like small for hills. larger rollers if you don't have a lot of hills to worry about. normal range for staton drives is 7/8 to 1.25 or 1.5 inches

Deacon, I wish I lived closer to your place it would be fun to go riding with you. I had a friend that lived out there a few years ago, but he moved back out here for family. I go to visit him out there and we went fishing out on the banks, what fun I loved the look of your coast. Keep up the good work, it is interesting to hear what you are op to. I look at your blog if you don't post here. Have fun, Dave

PS: Just for a little info. It looks like I have a Whizzer in the stable, I know it is a departure from the simple bikes we are working on, but I could not turn it down. It is new and at a discount, on the easy payment plan, (IE) when I get money, LOL. Back to you.

My neighbor who welds finished my smaller drive wheel for the chainsaw bike. I went through and tightened all the bolts and hit them with loctite. I am going to try it tomorrow since the 25cc is working like an old big ben alarm clock.

I swore I was going to retire it, but with the 25cc running so darn good, I have nothing else to do. I need to paint my garrage but it's just too darn hot right now.

Egor I would love to have you come ride with me. I'm enjoying these simple weed whacker bikes more than I thought I would.

The 25cc with the gravity clutch and the better drive wheel can climb most of the hills I have here. It has a lot to do with the tension and the surface of the drive wheel I think.

The 31cc had more guts but it wasn't much better or faster than the 25 with the better wheel. I think, I would just as soon have one as the other.

Looks like your Chernobyl bike just needs a tensioner. I had the same problem with my set up at first. I found a couple teeth just a tad bent and the chain had a couple stiff links. Once that was fixed, I eliminated the tensioner altogether and used turnbuckles to keep the chain tight. But the tensioner was nice because there was less friction, I may go back to it. Check out the pic....

Revelstone,
I like your set up....the engine is centered and you used the drive chain instead of the belt. (my set up is direct to the drive shaft so the belt is also the clutch) Is that hub used as a freewheel hub or just a paired gear set? Can your set up freewheel?

DEACON, MY PICTURE FILES ARE STILL TO LARGE. SET CAMERA FROM 5 TO 3 MP, STILL TO LARGE. :( WITH FAIRRACINGS INSTRUCTIONS, I SEE THATS EASY NOW= POSTING PIC. (ITS EASY TO PLAY THE PIANO, IF YOU KNOW HOW)rotfl I LIKED PICTURES IN WINDOWS XP. VISTA HOME PREMIUM IS DIFFERENT ?? SOMETIMES I REGRET THE CHANGE. NOW I WILL WORK ON THE RESIZING. EGOR AND DEACON THANKS FOR THE HELP YOU HAVE GIVEN ME. I WILL GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE POSTS. DEACON I CAN SEND PICTURES TO REGULAR EMAIL ADDRESS. :ride2:

Radmanfly, You Did Some Good Thinking. With The Bicycle Hub For A Jack Shaft, It Free Wheels When The Motor Is Not Running?? How Do You Start Engine, etc?? A Centrifical Clutch Would Be Good. All In All Very Good Set Up. Thanks For Sharing . Ron

Ron you either need a host for you images or an editor to change the size after they are shot. I pmed you a really simple way to downsize them automatically. The site hosts and then scales them down for the message boards.

REVELSTONE I WAS LOOKING AT YOUR CHAIN DRIVE WITH GEAR BOX SETUP AGAIN. WAS YOU USING THE DERAILER FOR A CHAIN TENSIONER ?? IF YOU PUT THE DERAILER ON THE DRIVERSIDE OF THE WHEEL CHAIN AND RAN SOME SLACK, COULD YOU MAKE IT A 2 SPEED ?? SHIFT IT WITH THE DERAILER ? LATER RON. :ride2:

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your interest in my bike.

Yes, the gear on the rear wheel is turning the gear on the jack shaft/hub all the time. Engine on or off. So there is some drag but not a lot. Just as easy to pedal as it was before adding the set up to the bike. But since the bicycle hub doubles as a jack shaft and as a freewheel gear, the pulley welded to the spoke end doesn't turn unless the engine is turning it.

I have a pull rope to start it from the saddle. No way to pop start it like it is currently set up. Luckily it starts first pull almost every time. I just have to start it up and hold the clutch until I'm going about 8-10 mph then let the clutch out. Or start it while moving from the saddle.

I may switch to centrifugal clutch and use a chain to drive the 3 speed hub I'm putting in place of this one. (If I ever find one) With a little larger gear to replace the pulley on the spoke side of the hub, I will get a nice mix of gears.

Also I'm considering welding the aforementioned gear closer to the gear driving the rear wheel, instead of on the other side of the hub allowing me to move the engine closer to the center line of the bike, an Idea I got from Revelstone, another member of this forum.

This will be the 4th reincarnation but constantly improving the end result so far. It runs great but I have been worrying about the tension on the crankshaft from the belt drive so this is a needed upgrade.

Hope this answers your questions. Scott

(p)Hello all! This is my first posting but I've been following the thread for a few weeks. I've just built my first bike (friction) and I'm addicted. I've got 2 bikes waiting for the conversion when I can find engines. My hobby has been metal working for a number of years. I've got 2 small lathes, a mill, drill press, and a lot of other tools that fit this new hobby perfect.

My reason for posting... I've noticed past discussion about "rollers", some of the ideas were GREAT!!! I did come upon a source for new rollers with a built in clutch that seem a perfect fit. I bought one and am going to try it on my next bike. The rollers were in a surplus sales store in San Diego for about $6 dollars. I am NOT connected to this store in any way only trying to pay back some of what I've learned here.

Hope that this helps someone?

Regards,

Al

I think I bought one of these on ebay. I had it welded to the sprocket on an electric motor. It worked very well so does the textured peg of a bmx bike if you can make fit. I am using one of those now on my 25cc engine on a bike.
