Friction Drives

Well it's tomorrow now, the gravity clutch cables have been adjusted, and the drive wheel is all ready to go but... I had new neighbors move in last night. I hate to wake them up to the sound of a chainsaw motor at 7am. I am sitting here all excited to try it out but I can't bring myself to wake them up that way. I'm going to wait till eight then feed my dogs and put them out for the day. Then I am going to take the bike out for a spin.

I tell you it's Probably a democratic conspiracy to frustrate me... lol

My first impression of the jb and sand is favorable. It allowed me to start the 33cc chainsaw bike by pedaling. True I had warmed it up with the pull start first but it did drag start twice for me.

The amount of friction is much much better than the smooth drive wheel. How durable it is I don't know.

I wonder if strips of it running across the wheel like speed bumps would work even better. When this wears off I am going to try it. I am also going to try it with some other types of epoxy. JB is the most expensive of them all. If it works this well it is worth it unless some other will do the same for half the price. Will just have to wait and see.

All I need is a left handed 11mm nut and a steel axle peg with the texture like a file and I would have a peg that would never wear out. I might go that route as well.

It wore off after 2 miles. I let it cure two days. It was awfully rough so maybe the sand wasn't good enough. I am going to try something else this time.Tomorrow is wallymart shopping day soooo I'm going to try to buy a piece of plastic mat. a screen like the ladies use for cross stitch. then I am going to mix up some jbweld and cover a drive wheel. I am going to press the matt down into it to give it testure, Then i want to let it cure and see if the jb will stay on without the sand to break it loose.

Someone who welds should just weld a few bars on a drive wheel something like speed bumps

Deacon - I am back from my trip to Utah, I went riding in the mountains with a 250cc buggy I have. I have been looking at the last threads about the JB weld and I am still using the sanding belt, contact glued to the roller. I took a piece of metal the other day and ran it on the roller to take some of the edge off the belt, near wore a hole in the bar, works nice for a grinder, LOL. Any way it was easy to install and I think will be just about indestructible. My Solex has a coating that looks like a mix of Epoxy and very heavy granules of what looks like carbide, been there forever. Have fun, Dave

PS: I just made a slot across the roller to start the sanding belt in so there is no edge to peal off, slop glue on both sides and let dry, line up and your done. Don't touch till it is straight, or "you know".

The drill dimpled drive wheel works really well. I broke my bit that would start on a pipe without a scratch to start it in. So I couldn't find my punch of course. I took a mason hammer I had laying around and just beat the devil out of my pipe. I planned to dimple it on the scratches then I thought it looked pretty rough so I'll give it a good try next new motor I build. I tried it on the gifted engine but the engine runs so poorly it's hard to tell what it did.

that engine might do better if I let off some of the tension but it really is just too small. Anyway I'll let you know how the beat up pipe does.

Deacon I got a Whizzer so I am kinda a traitor to the friction drive. I still have the friction bike and am going to make a larger drive wheel for it. I also have 3 China bikes and an extra kit, but no wheels to put it on. I am looking for an old fashioned straight tube bike, I like the early motorbike look, the 1910 look. My next project is going to be a, what I hope will be an early look alike for the Flying Merkel with a Briggs engine from a rotary mower and a empty rim alongside the rear wheel for the belt. Keep up the good work. Have fun, Dave

To be honest I have my book finished.... I have a good frame and an engine coming. I have a good chainsaw bike and a good china bike. When I finish the suspension bike, I think I have done it all. I am probably going to cut back the time I spend on bikes.

I most likely will go looking for something else. Oh course for now that isn't in the cards I still have to finish the Sara bike. That the name of my grand daughter the one who used to own the full suspension bike.

I got bit by the motorbike bug a long time ago. I still have 15 Honda 50's all from the 60's but two and they are from the 50's. I have been meaning to restore them someday. There is also a 29 Ford in there somewhere, I need to get that done someday. The problem is that I get started on other things instead. I am going to retire in three years and so I wonder if that is when I will get some done. Have fun, Dave

Egor, My First Car Was A 1928 Model A. As You No Doubt Know, The 28 Has The Short Squat Radiator. A Lot Of Brake Rods To Adjust.:)

Well guys the downside of friction drive has bit me in the butt this week.

It has rained two straight days and is going to again tomorrow. I do have a china bike I could ride, but to be honest I don't really want to ride in the rain. Maybe the friction drive doesn't matter since I could ride and don't anyway.

So I guess I'll see if China has any surplus rain preventing rockets..(left over from the Olympics of course

There are supposed to be rain rollers! It wold be fun if you had some good rain slickers, warm and dry is the name of the game. I took both the china bike out and the Whizzer for a ride today, the Whizzer needs a lot of attention runs like Doodo, they jacked with the HP so much from the factory to keep it at the 2HP thing when you start to make it breath it starts to cough. I went to move the cam timing today and to my surprise it is moved, so next I need to move the Ign timing, I know that will make a large difference. Then on to the carb most too fat I will have to go to the Honda dealer and get a smaller main jet. The China bike will wooop the Whizzer hands down, but the Whizzer is a looker and a fun ride, I will get it going. Deacon I wish I could get to your Happy time bike, all my secrets would have it running like a fine watch, ER Yamaha, and there would not be a hill you could not climb. . Have fun, Dave

The china bike will hill climb for sure if you made it any better I would be afraid to ride it lol. But you are right I have never done anything to it but assemble and ride it. Since I don't really push it hard, it is fine. Actually it is the bike I trust the most but nearly the fun as the home brew bikes these days.

Now go crazy and post lots of pictures.... lol

I like the zipcycle. Is the motor uncomfortable where it is placed. I guess it wouldn't be any worse than the china motor between your legs since it doesn't hang over.

Deacon, Have Not Run The Motor Yet. It Has A 15 Tooth Cogged Pulley On Engine Going To 48 Tooth Pulley On The Jack Shaft With A 2 " Drive Roller. I Just Got The 8m X 1m Rite Hand Thread Nuts To Try Lock On Crankshaft To Start The Motor With Electric Drill. It Runs Counter Clock Wise On That Side Of Motor. It Has Compression And Spark, I Cleaned Carb. Need To Dump Old Gas . Ron

Deacon, This Is My Third Try! Am Going To Get Pictures Uploaded Before I Do My Long Winded Typing !! :-{:-{ Wait Here , I Going After The Pictures For The Third D%# Time. :d
