Friction Drives

Revelstone I Like Your Friction Drive Mount, Nice And Simple And It Works. The Big Washers On The Ready Rod Pivot Bolt Pipe Keep It Inline. I Have Been Thinking How To Mount The 49cc Eng With The Trans Somewhat Like Your Setup. I Was Thinking Of Having The Transmission Hand Straight Down. Then Try To Get A Big Enough Sprocket On The Wheel To Avoid The Jackshaft. May Not Be Able To Get The Rite Ratio Without The Jack Shaft!! What Size Sprocket Did You Have On The Wheel ? Did The Gearing Seem About Rite ? Later Ron

two places to go for jackshaft help. first is Index of /ratiocalc this one will help you calculate the gears needed with or without a jackshaft. (probably will need one)
second is Giles Puckett Sprocket plotting program at this web page.
Home Built Bikes - Giles Puckett's Sprocket Calculator this one will help you make your own sprockets so you wont need a jackshaft. good luck with that !!!!

gear ratio was 9 27 16 28 15 48 in that order. ratio comes out at 16.80:1, which is only 1.95 below optimum. it could work. the only problem with the gear setup is that it was fine at 20 mph, consistantly came off the upper cog at 22 or 23 mph. get as close to 18.75:1 as you can using the gearratio.exe program.

Deacon, I got the friction clutch done for the park cast off bike. I used a piece of rod from the end of a fence, you know the ones that hold all the fabric at the end poles. Well a pic is worth a thousand words, so here is a pic. Have fun Dave

PS: One is clutch engaged and then off. Oh I drilled and tapped a 6mm hole for a screw to hold it in gear.

I love it your spring holds it up and the lever pushes it down. It is pure genius. I have been looking for so simple an idea. now I have to rethink everything I did but it is well worth it. Next time I work on the chainsaw bike I am going to have a new idea.

For the front end engine it all has to hook to the moving parts or it wont work at all.

You didn't mention it but that would work great at the stop lights and signs as well. Once you know you are going to stop, I'm sure you disengage it and coast the the spot. It is by far a better idea than mine.

I don't do tap and die but a simple hose clamp would give me the lock as well and be adjustable.

You could use a long pop rivet with a piece of tubing out there also. I take it out of gear at the stops and it works good, the lever is on the right, but I just reach across and let it go works great. Thanks for the complements. That bar for the link fence is easy to bend also, I just needed a vice, and a good pull. Have fun, Dave

Hey Guys, I Just Bought A Nice Used Zip Cycle Last Nite. The Drive Roller Is Wore Out. No Parts Available !! Ck Out Thir Website Though. The Gas Tank Is A Clove Box. The Web Site Makes You Think They Are Still Alive!! Not So Ron

Egor Thats A Nice Simple Set Up, You Get Ten Atta Boys For That Build.(^) The Zip Cycle I Just Bought Is A Friction Dr. If You Look On The Web Site It Doesn`t Show Small Details, But General Idea. I`m Like A Sailor On Shore Leave, Spending All The Money On Motor Bikes And Parts. Zip Has A Cogged Belt To Jack Shaft With About 2" Or More Rubber Roller . The Motor And All Pivots With Clutch Lever On Handle Bars. It Has Spring Pressure Against Wheel. Has A Small Gas Tank (bottle) By Engine. I Will Put China Bike Gas Tank Where The Fake Tank Is. Will Have To Put The China Bike Type Carb On It With One Fuel Line. Or Can I Plug Return Line ??there Was A Small Rock Wedged In Stopping The Friction Roller From Turning, They Flat Spotted The Roller (badly) Its More Square Than Round. I Bought It For $250. Its In Nice Condition. Its A Keeper, Its Family Now! Now , If I Get Lucky (luckier :)) I Might Find Sume Used Parts. The Web Site Lists A Page Of Dealers All Around The Usa, They Are Gone ! Keep Up The Good Posting Guys ( And Gals=jemma Mite Read This ! Haven`t Heard From Crazy Lately). Still Have Not Received Anything From Viza Motors, Scottsdale Az Pd $206 On June 6. Man I Wish I Had A Zip Roller:( Ron

get a good pic of the roller we might be able to come up with something for you to substitute.

Egor you have me thinking outside the box (hard thing for an old man.)

The problem with the cable pull for the front gravity bike is the short throw and the cable always seems to stretch or something. I have decided what I need to do is to change from a lever to a simple pull handle. I am going to experiment tomorrow with just a cable with a wooden handle run through a tube on the handlebars.

I could pull it far enough back to start the bike. I could probably set the tube far enough down the handlebars so that to keep it up I just hold it in my left hand while I get the bike started then just let go of it.

The more I think about it the better I like that solution. If I am going to use a simple shifter cable I could just drill a small hole in the mountain bikes flat handlebar. Instead of a wooden handle I might put a simple ring on it to hook over my thumb while I get the bike moving.

Then just ease it back to come to a stop. I could control the pull and not worry about the lever at all.

To test it I will just use a piece of cord over the handlebars first. Didn't want you to think I would destroy the bike before I was sure it would work lol

Okay i'm thinking ring on the end of the cable. Self tapping metal screw a few inches from the cable

1.Pull it back
2.hook it over the screw
3.start the bike
4.then when you are moving, gently push it off the screw.

Repeat steps to stop at stop sign.

Basically the KISS principle.

Hey Deacon Thanks For The Offer. :)I Have To Figure This Picture Thing Out. It`S The Resizing Thing Now. Guy Had Told Me What To Do. I Just Need To Do It. Then I Can Drive You All Nuts With Pictures !! The Pictures Sure Make It More Interesting. All These Motor Bike Addicts And Their POSTS!! Great Stuff! :ride:

Deacon, I don't know if this will help but I have a Solex 3800 I think a 63 vintage. This is how they do the front drive handle for the friction. It springs down and you hold it up with the handle, you can see the ketch. Have fun, Dave

thanks egor, I always wondered how they did that on the bike bug. It must have been similar. More things to think about.

I use the same theory on the mtb but I'm using a cable to lift it. I finally got it to work today.

Egor, Deacon Have You Guys Ever Heard Of The Zip Cycle. The Motor Is Mounted Under The Seat And The Whole System Pivots With The Handlebar Clutch Lever. Pedal To Start And Release Lever To Engage. Also Has A Lever Beside The Fake Gas Tank (looks Like China Bike Tank) Must Be For Added Pressure For Starting Or Crossing Rivers rotfl LATER MY FRIENDS RON:ride2:

Never heard of it. if you have a link to a information page I sure would like to take a look. All those old engines have some clues for us butchers to emulate.

DEACON, HI I PUT THE ZIPCYCLE (ONE WORD) ON MY FAVORITES, SO I CHECKED IT OUT WITH GOOGLE FOR YOU JUST TO MAKE SURE. THEY ARE OUT OF BUSINESS FOR A LONG TIME BUT THE WEB SITE IS STILL RUNNING. I LOVE THE BIKE, HAVE HAD IT TWO DAYS NOW. HAVE NOT STARTED IT BECAUSE OF THE ROLLER, WILL GET AT THAT SOON. I HAVE IT OFF. WILL POST DETAILED PIC SOON. WHEN YOU SEARCH "ZIPCYCLE" ON GOOGLE ( I DO NOT HAVE GOOD LUCK WITH AT&T SEARCHES) IT SHOULD BE FIRST CHOICE . IT WILL SAY "motorized bicycle ZIPCYCLE electric= etc". i searched it about three times before reply to you. let me know if you find it or not. YOU WILL GET THE DEALER PAGE, CLICK ON HOME. THEN TELL ME IF ANY OF YOUR MOTORS SOUND LIKE THAT:-{ RON

I got nothing like that but I had seen that site before I just forgot it. I hope you got your bike for less than a grand.

I am curious not to see the roller. I used to mount electric motors under the seak like that. i think with mine you would bet a leg burn sooner or later.

Deacon The Drive Roller Was So Bad The Seller Could Not Start The Motor, He Was Asking 400. I Offered 250 And He Jumped On It, I Got The Money Out Of My Sock Asap.:ride2: I LIKE IT, THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THEIR LOCATION IN THE UPPER RITE CORNER OF THEIR POST, MAKES IT A BIT MORE INTERESTING. LATER MY FRIEND. RON (p)

So the drive wheel aways stays in contact with the bike wheel. That is interesting. Or are you saying the drive wheel was so bad the when it was released it would not make contact.

You can probably figure out how to dis assemble it all the way back to the drive shaft. they have to put those things on after the motor is manufactured I think.

I bet that the shaft is threaded somewhere. If it is then it should be relatively easy to attach a drive wheel. Of course the clutch might be a problem.
