I think if I had to choose though, I'd pick a Russian D (maybe even sight-unseen). Remember: it isn't that I've had any real trouble from my China gurl. Quite the opposite; she's been more reliable than my Dodge Caravan, and my Caravan is the second-most reliable 4-wheeler I've owned. (#1= Mitsubishi Eclipse)
But I have no illusions: I got a good one instead of a lemon. And I can tell by the casting finish quality, and from other complaints that I've read, that these things are pretty close to being a disposable engine. So I figure the Russians could easily done a better job, considering they probably cared more about whether it would run or not.
 
I was talking to a guy from russia at the local AMPM (he was the tanker driver) and was looking at my bike in the back of my truck.... and he was telling me about the Russian Motor's. Really cool to see pictures of them. Now of course, I want one to add to my collection. I wonder if they run smoother?

The ones I have rode are way smoother, but they are gutless compared to the china girl.
 
Supercub, I looked into buying one from the manufacturer way back. Moscow? Internet "way back" is a couple of years, snork. But is in this thread some where. (lol, way back) but the engines are still or at least were still made but now are manufactured as pumps. So can be bought but are not bicycle ready. I did not purchase one because at the time, the shipping was some thing like $300 USD.

Wish I had bought one. Be the first kid on my block with one fer'sure.
 
Factory was in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg now).
Factory still sells some motorized things http://www.motoblok.ru/
but such old engines, even as moto-pumps - not produced at least some years. Enthusiasts buy remained in stocks. Last remainings...

In post-USSR these engines can be bought in secondary market, for example: http://www.ss.lv/en/eur/transport/moto-transport/mopeds/riga/sell/

but I think - noone will deal with shipping overseas. Or, as Dan said, it would be expensive.

SuperCub, just saw your from New London. I used to live there and worked on the ferries. (The boats! not the bank street crowd, snork)

But in the summer, we host a picnic/ ride thing up just south of Hartford. Great fun and some awesome folks.
 
Here is an American copy of the Russian motor. I've got more photos with it all assembled I think if i can find them.

An "American copy of the Russian motor"? That was all you had to say to peak my interest. I believe in supporting our country's economy whenever possible. And I have great hopes that this engine will have better attention-to-detail than the Chinese knock-offs, and maybe even comparable to the real Russian ones.

That is why I'd like to ask if you could tell me where it came from, and are there more over there, and how much do they want for them? I would be much obliged and very grateful for whatever details you have time to supply.

If I remember correctly their was something like 18 proto types planned but only two were made. They were made by a vendor I used to work for that no longer exists.

Cost for the kits were never determined since the finally product never came to be. Still trying to find those other photos not sure what has become of them?

Just thought I'd share the attempt to make a Russian motor.

I need some parts to make it complete such as seat. fenders, side cover for motor, any other sheet metal, a lever on the motor that appears to be broke and anything elese you guys/gals can come up with. Are the forks on the brand new looking blue bike in the bike shop the ones you were working on with the paint brush ? They look the same. If so thats a very VERY impressive restoration job!

Also whats that stuff your putting on them with the brush some kind of polyurethane
 
Super interesting thread. Looks like it's been dormant for a while. I only came across it because it was linked in another thread.

But this is the first up close look I've had at the old Russian "D" series engines. Nice looking stuff.
