Maytag Flyer

It was from the HD shop about 3 years ago, it was on my shelf since then. I see other brands of wrinkle paint at my auto supply shop.

As for power, if it is enough to move my fat arse down the street then its good. Anything else is just a guess.
 
Same here I'm 6'1" and 200lbs, all the mods on the Indian are just to insure that I will get the 40 mph and durable at the same time.
 
At 6'2" 235lbs with worn out parts and a grumpy disposition I only need parade speed from this engine, easy starts and smooth running.
It is more mobile art than it is a mode of cross country transportation. Meant to get people either thinking or confused.
No need to worry about trying to get this licensed as it will spend most of its time running around inside event grounds at bike shows, swap meets etc.
When I need more wind in my face then the bigger bikes come out too play.
 
Me was 6'2" shorter now about the same weight wore out and just had a new knee put in. I am with you don't need the speed..........Curt
 
This is why my cyclemotor, laggardly though the build be, will be to the minimum legal spec. I've done fast, heroic, noisy. Now I'm sniffing the flowers and watching the birdies fly.

It was built to look like it came from an old split window vw bus.
In finished form it carries a motorcycle in the back.
 
Whozawhat, Looking good. Your build is fairly close to what I'm working on. I'll also have the leaf spring front fork, large hoop belt drive, and I'm planning on using my Maytag 72 for the power. Mine will be mounted differently though. No chance these 2 bikes will get confused.
My question for you is, Where did you get the mag rewound, and how much did it set you back? mine is just weak enough that it won't start. I was trying to decide if I wanted to get the mag fixed, or use a Harley coil with a battery.
Like the VW too. I have a 1970 type 3 fastie hoggin up one of my garage bays.

I am in Canada so the magneto had the magnets recharged at Adrian's magneto Service in Manitoba Canada, there are more places in the US to get them done, check out the SMOKSTAK website and look in the sponsors list.

The coil is new and came from Zach at the maytagshed, search for zkstuff on ebay, he has lots of Maytag parts.
They are pricey though, I wanted to keep the system as original as possible so I popped for the coil.
It was something like $150 or $180, one of the single biggest expenditures on this build, but I wanted it.
 
You can also try closing up your plug gap a little, and adding a booster magnet inside the flywheel, there is a youtube video showing a guy adding a small rare earth magnet inside the flywheel to give a boost to the magnetic field.
also be careful how you test for spark as these coils are two singles tied together without grounds on the secondaries.

I'm not any kind of Maytag expert. I have messed with a few, and I almost got my twin started by closing down the gaps. I have plans to build a magnet re-charger, and I hope to complete that project this summer. It may start with just that, but I've been watching off and on for a reasonably priced coil. They are hens teeth. I never miss a chance to chase a lead. I am a member over on "the Stak" Good guys over there. a great resource for vintage engines on the builds here. Thanks for the tips.
I hope I can start posting some build pics like the eye candy in this thread soon. No heat in the shop, and it's still pretty frozen here in the fingerlakes.

Yup but only a little bit.

I have been busy with some other projects the past few weeks and have not made much progress on the Flyer.

Here is an update.
I reinstalled the engine in the frame so a proper measurement for the throttle cable could be made.

Figured that I may as well do the test runs with the engine in the frame. So I ran some Kreem fuel tank liner through the gas tank so it was ready to go.
Then because the space between the fuel petcock and the carburetor was so short, I decided to go with an intank filter similar to what was used on some older British bikes.
Not wanting to buy an expensive petcock just for the filter, I took a sintered brass filter from an older Chevy carb,

then cut the center out of it.

the center cone section of filter is now securely fit into the top end of the petcock and it flows more than adequate fuel.

Also modified the fuel fitting at the carb so it would accept the rigid copper fuel line. A fuel line was twisted into shape and installed.

The secondary belt drive pulley was also finally finished up at the machine shop. (I ordered it last Halloween)

Now the alignment of the secondary belt tensioner pulley can be set and the final welding done to that part.

But that will have to wait for awhile as other projects are getting in the way and spring is getting closer(^).

Hey Whozawhat! No wonder you don't have any time for the bike build. I see you've been busy entertaining magazine reporters. I was at the local bookstore, parusing the VW mags, as my other project is a 1970 VW Type 3 Fastback, and what was the main write-up in Hot VWs? Bugsplat! Excellent article! Well deserved.
Now, how about this bike? Any progress? I'm hoping to have my garage in order soon and be able to start on my Maytag. Yours has been an inspiration to me to get started.
 
Hey Banjoben, yes the car was keeping me busy, when the magazine came out I also had the car in a show in Toronto. Perfect time to try and sell it off, only had it advertised less than a week and it was gone. A few other small projects, family commitments, and the coming warmer weather have kept me from making much progress on the Flyer. Soon I will have my motorcycle out and then the Flyer will probably sit idle untill the fall and cooler weather forces me back inside.
