d.i.y. stainless air filter ($5 toothbrush holder)

i've been trying to do away with all the plastic on my boardtracker.
while wondering through walmart yesterday, i came up with a cool idea for an air filter.
it all starts with a $5 ss toothbrush holder. there where a few to choose from, but only one type with a tight fitting lid.

i used the plastic screen in the stock filter as a template /screen. i did have to remove the taps with an x-acto.

you'll need to drill a hole for both bolts and the nut that holds on the choke, and of coarse, holes for the air to flow through.

once the holes are inplace, its just a question of bolting the toothbrush holder to the carb (you'll have to replace/cut down the original bolts), adding a sponge and your done.

while i'm not sure its improved preformance,it hasn't hindered it.

does look cool though.

That air filter looks badass on your bike!! It fills the empty space in the frame perfectly!
But it won't work on our bikes because of the seat post tube... :(

i didn't even realize.lol
its the first mb i've assembled. :) never put one on a standard frame.

i surpose the rest of you could notch the toothpase holder on the top/bottom and fit it around the seat tube. would be pretty easy to do with a dremel.

theres a few custom builds here it would work on.
 
yeah, as he said, that filter harmonizes with your frame (esp the mount part) perfectly! It looks like you had that toothbrush holder in mind when you built the frame! :)
 
Great idea for a price that cant be beat!

But if you wouldnt mind spending a little bit more for a little nicer look, you can buy velocity stacks for motorcycle carbs. Heres a link with a nice selection: Velocity Stacks
 
I like the way you think. It's great to see a custom piece that didn't require a big cash outlay, machinist, or welder.
 
thx guys, i appreciate the kind words. i've had nothing but fun on this build and lovin every minute of it.

i tried to locate some velocity stacks locally. they where hard to find, and when i did eventually find them, they were more than i could afford. :)

the tooth brush holder wasn't planned, but i don't think i couldn't have found a better fitting air filter.

as for the ratty look to the bike, i'm lovin it also. i was gonna paint it indian red just like the original that inspired me. now i'm thinkin about flat black for the frame/some of the motor and calling it a done deal (probably change the number plate colors also)
 
i actually finished it today (which happens to be one year to the day since the start of this build) it spent alot of that time sitting idol/ in project form, in my basement.
