Man the old/new girl looks good. I like the suspenders too ! Might as well look the part....riding in wearing modern looking clothes just wouldn't seem right. Do you have it registered as a motorcycle ?

MHF
I have it registered as a moped for the lifetime plate. I'll keep it this way as long as I can. I have spoken to law enforcement a few times while riding it or having it parked in front of star bucks. They just wanted to take pictures and talk bikes. No issues so far. I can always register it as a scooter. The period clothing works for shows, events, and parades. I do ride it more with my regular clothing on though. My real DOT helmet is a British Pudding Bowel. Not period correct because it's from the 30's through 50's, but it works because I can still use the goggles. Cafe' Racers are the rage now and they are all about retro.

I had a thought today about my Comet series 30 Torque Verter Transmission. To date I have roughly 1800 miles on it and it works fine, but I have been through 3 belts with the 4th one on the unit now. The belts don't really wear out, they just stretch until they flop around and don't work well anymore. Then I put a new belt on and I'm back in business. I have held onto all my used belts and they are all in great shape except the stretch. And it's only about an inch. I was doing some research today and found the specs for the Comet Series 30. It says the distance between the center of the drive (front) pulley and the driven (rear) pulley is supposed to be between 6" 15/16ths and 7" in length. I measured mine and came up with 6.5" . It hit me, "No frakin wonder my belts are sloppy when broken in, the pulleys are too close together!" So I wake up at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and in my robe and slippers (when I get an idea I have to utilize it NOW), I take the Comet off and re-do the holes that mount it to the engine case so I now have 7 1/8" from pulley to pulley. All my old belts work great. I put a brand new belt on and it works great. I think I will get full life of my belts now. The shifting is even smoother now too as a bonus. I don't know why I had lost a whole half an inch but it makes a world of difference. So bottom line, if you use the Comet make sure you have 7" inches center to center or it won't work the way it should.

Hey John...I started to put together my new motor and purchased the comet brand CVT, I noticed your belt issue and found the one supplied was too long. I tried the one I purchased for the GTC CVT and it fits just right, so my assumption is the ones with the Comet are too big for sure. Hope this helps with the pictures.

I know they have the rear driven sprocket in 6" and 7" sizes. They probably use the same belt size for both, and it works ok until it stretches slightly after break-in. The 1/2" lengthening of unit on the engine fixed it very nice. I got to take a half link out of the drive chain also. So what size difference do you think there is between both belts? 1"?

Are these the belts that are stamped "203589"?

My belt is a 12-8487. Here is a link to the Comet belt specs guide.

Torque Converter Belts - Comet Belts

It says my belt (which is the shortest by the way) works for systems 6 15/16" to 7" long center to center. For a new belt that is great, but when it stretches after break in it doesn't work any more. The 1/2" farther distance I put the Comet rearward fixed it all. I put a brand new belt on and the rear driven adjusts to fit the normal belt. There are several different lengths of belts and I'm just guessing that this one fell between the cracks and doesn't work perfect when the belt stretches. I will be able to get full belt life now out of my belts.

Thanks for the link!

Looks like they’re same belt.

I bought the clone engine nearly a year ago and Torq-o-verter in the spring. But my projects always seem to happen at a very slow pace compared to most others...

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you doing all this fine R & D!

I’ll re-drill for 7”, I wanted to rotate it a bit anyway.

Thanks again!!!

Am in the process of building my Steel Stretch Cruiser with Honda 160cc OHC like CCC is building now. Am not sure what cvt to use. Thought they were pre-drilled to fit most 4 stroke engines at the factory!!?? Plan on ordering one by the end of the week.

Do you have any advice to offer? Plan on riding it a lot in the Wi/Mn outback next summer, do need dependability.

Posting the belt fix will help a lot of us, a need to watch thingy. Thanks.

Have two Workman trikes, one was cut in half =$15. Will have the back two rims and spokes laced to my two hd 4 sealed brgs per hub from Bicycle engines. Will rob the front workman wheel of the good trike, has the .120" (1/8" dia) spokes and the big drum brake for my stretch build. May start a thread on it as it starts to shape up.

It is supposed to be pre-drilled but just measure to make sure you have seven whole inches from center bolt to center bolt or you will need to do what I did. It's not a big deal because the Comet plate is Swiss Cheesed any how, lots of room for other holes. You are going to need to make four holes anyway if you were planning on mounting the Comet at the same angle as me anyhow. Now that I think about it, my Clone engine is not a "true" clone because there are little tiny differences such as it takes it's own proprietary head gasket that is not interchangeable with any other clone engine. It is entirely possible that my four mounting holes for the comet were 1/2" off from what other motors have. So don't assume it will be spot on as is.

I fixed this photo so you don't need a magnifying glass to see it now. This little kid probably didn't know what an old motorcycle looked like and his Dad is telling him about it. Priceless.

Coker reproductions of Simplex Servicycle tires will fit 26" bicycle rims. They are 26X2.5 . If you read my past threads I speak a lot about it. It's a great tire.

That is the best part, they fit regular 26" bicycle rims! It's the only motorcycle tire that I know of that does this. The size is called 26x2.5 for Simplex motorcycles. Coker Tire sells them. Don't get the 26x2 1/2 as it's a different tire and won't fit our rims.
I was on Coker today and that tire is gone but they have a 26x2.5 with a different tread. They also have a 26x3 but the bead look different. I'm going to use worksman wheels. What do you know about these tires?

Thanks, Chris
