Really Cheap Trail Rider.

Heres the final rough out. Positioned the pedals/pegs as low as possible and its fairly comfortable. These are not pegs I will be standing on but they are plenty strong for normal riding. Got a tad closer to the chain than I should have but it clears ok. Will add a small chain guard on the front chain run. Now the real fun begins!

Your pedal foot rests are interesting to me since I have been contemplating extra wide pedal cranks that are mostly for appearance (to look like a functional pedal bike with chain to the rear wheel and all), but are really just movable foot rests.

I laid out parts from a standard Schwinn one piece crank, cut each arm and made up doglegs to widen the whole thing to accommodate a fatty engine. This nut job is for the "kindalikeawhizzer" build with a fatboy 5 horse Tecumseh engine. The thing is, the doglegs are copper pipe elbows. No, I wouldn't stand on it. Ha! And no, I wouldn't even try to pedal it, but I wouldn't pedal it anyway, being semi crippled in the first place and the bike being a heavy weight in the second. About a month ago I shared the idea and below photos with fasteddy and Tinsmith. Neither were impressed. I may still do it as a kind of working/dummy crank until such time that someone can use an oxy torch and do some bending on a one piece extra wide crank (which isn't wide enough as is).

I would drill and bolt the pieces together. In the second photo the top crank is the only extra wide one piece crank available. Nice, but not wide enough. You can see how much wider the dogleg version is.

I promise a vid of this bike , the 3speed S3X shifter, and the Maytag. However my mother is in ICU(but recovering well after a fall) in Savannah some 78mi distant. Im going every other day but that takes the bulk of the week. I was joking to my wife that right in the middle of this situation our house that is for sale would sell, requiring a move. It sold Saturday! That's a good thing but Cannonballs bike time will be limited in the near long run. Looking at house to move to in between everything else. Life is never dull it seems!

That's pretty cool SB. I wanted to just weld the old crank under the BB but of course it would contact the primary sprocket so placement had to be either ahead or behind the BB sprocket. Ahead was more comfortable. Its pretty stout.
And at least the bike has "pedals". Was free to do to which is the idea of a cheap build.

Wow, it sounds like your plate is full. Best wishes for you mom's recovery. That must be a worry. Good for you on the house sale. I can't imagine packing up and moving down there in the heat of the summer. People hear about the cold winters up my way and say "how can you survive at forty below zero!" My answer is more clothes, thicker coats and boots and mitts and dry firewood. But in your situation you can't take off any more than all of your clothes and even that wouldn't enough for me. My neighbor stopped by yesterday to survey what bike craziness I'm doing (he truly does not understand my bike building), and we both started to complain about how hot it was. And today is supposed to be close to 70, even hotter than yesterday! By midsummer when temps might reach 90 everyone is cooling off in the many lakes or sitting in front of a fan ready to pass out. Not much call for air conditioners in my neck of the woods. Anyway, with all that's going on, take care.

Thanks Yall! Good news is she is doing very well and maybe released later this week. Bad news is I got way too much stuff to move!!
 
Heres a vid of a little CAG running its heart out for a kid. I cant say for sure but seems to never top out completely because of all the stopping/starting. Notice how he starts to cool it when he gets close to home. Good boy! Wish I had some thing like this when I was a kid! WOW! And he raised the CG by 1.5"(not 2). From the sound of it either Big Ray is too much of an aerodynamic/gravitational hindrance or he still has the throttle limit involved.
PLUS hes one handing holding the camera in the other. The man knows no fear!
 
After seeing bostontom's GP inspired bike...... http://motorbicycling.com/showthread.php?t=58736 ....... I find myself wondering how something similar using a CAG engine would work out. I should have a rat about amongst some of the faux mountain bike style frames I've got under the house and see if I can find a suitable base to work some ideas from.

So what are you saying? The CAG aint going on the Herc?

I can get another CAG, but while I'm messing around with measuring up, drilling holes and brazing things I can make up a mounting for an Italian style conversion on one of my spare frames. The Hercules is the priority though and the engine that's coming has the Hercules's name on it.

Got the frame painted late yesterday as a sort of relaxation therapy from lifes current pressures. Not much to post a pic of, just flat black tubing. Can now begin final assembly as time allows. I blew over my $125 limit with new tires which are in transit. The actual build will come in around that.
 
Um..... (blush).... sorry Ludwig. Posting pictures of horizontal engined Italian motorbikes that shall remain nameless on an open forum was very naughty of me. Young and impressionable minds might have been corrupted and scarred for life.
I shall attempt to mend my ways and sin no more......
 
Got a chance to work on the bike in between the chaos that is everyday life for the present.
Its up on its wheels literally as the tires are in transit. I found some pretty aggressive 2.125 knobbies that should make it a capable trail rider. I had not run the derailleur chain line yet and was pretty pleased at its run. Does not hit the chain stay as I feared it might with the 13t front sprocket.
So its down to handles, throttle and cables basically until the tires arrive. Might soon have a rideable bike.
