just throwing this out for discussion, motorbicycling.com is the best motor bike site in the world for our hobby, it only stand to reason that we should also hold the land speed record for motorized bikes. my idea is that we should form together as a group forum team and make a record attempt. if we manage to set a record it would be in the name of motorbicycling.com

we'll need to find a group of members who live in or near the salt and are willing to be the race crew. as a whole the rest of the forum would support them through donations of parts and money, set up in a paypal acount the crew could draw from.

any members who could attend the race will be part of the support crew and video crew.

so, what does everyone think. i've got lots of stuff i could donate. if we can make this go i'll even donate an S6S morini to get it started.

Sounds like we'll need a nice strong stretched out frame all set up with Morini mounts. Were could we find a frame like that?

Sounds like something I would like to be a part of...............

Is there a MB record already? What is it?

Who has a the 2011 rule book? I think we need to start there first.

yeah. we'll need to do some research, find out the rules, what the record is now, what class we'll be in, all that stuff. plus some respected members out west to intrust the effort too.

It seems that AugiDog on the other forum was sponsored by one of the advertisers on that site and ran at Bonneville but I don't remember any more about it.

are you volunteering to lead the race crew pat. i think you would be a good choice. what i'd like is a group of members who live close enough to each other that they could get together on weekends and work as a group on the project with imput from the forum. and also make the commitment to run the bike at speed week.

Camlifter,
I am certainly hinting at it. I have also been thinking about making an attempt for some time. Getting a group of guys together from, and for, the forum would be great and would really spread the work around so a serious attempt could be made. It would be necessary to research what it is exactly that we are attempting. What I mean is that we need to find out what class we would fall under, or possibly pick a class where we could really set a record. I don't have the time to lead the effort but could possibly come up with a frame to match your engine for the attempt. Maybe even assemble the bike in my shop with a local crew of forum members using donated parts.

augidog at bonneville - MotoredBikes.com: Motorized Bicycle Forum

Augidog's top Bonneville speed was 32mph, which is very easy to beat. High-performace street MB's reach that speed within one city block.

I expect top speed with a high-performance engine to be close to twice Augidog's speed.xct2

that's not sayin' much. do you mean Leslie "Red" Parkhurst?

Board-Track Racing in the Twentieth Century: 100mph 100 years ago

Terry Parkhurst (no relation) wrote the article.:)

back on topic, the main problem is there isn't an official "motorized bicycle" category, so we would be racing against other 50cc bikes, depending on the class we'd get put into.

so, you could have the fastest motorized bicycle, but you wouldn't get an official land speed record. unless, of course, you beat whatever else was in your class.

i've been trying to figure it out and i'm waiting on a rule book.

i've heard a lot of different info from people who may or not know whats up, and i'm trying to get it all straight.

for instance, i was told if it goes over 60mph you need approved tires. that would mean heavy motorcycle tires and wheels.

there's a ton of other things in the motorcycle rules that our bikes can't even begin to comply with.

it seems to me that for now, we'd just be a novelty on the salt.

but i still wanna go and race my own bikes.:)

(edit) i've also been told that the salt isn't the easiest surface to run on. a bike that goes 50 on the street might run a lot slower on the salt.

So if we can't claim an official land speed record, then lets claim an unofficial record. One thing that comes to mind in the 50cc class is the use of a transmission. Is there a 50cc class without a transmission? Whatever the class I am game to give it a go. If we have a lightweight jocky then all the better. Sounds like an adventure we would be talking about for a very long time............
