Shanghai Scrambler

Hit a brick wall when I tried to lace the original steel rims to modern hubs for reliable brakes. I need to figure out how to calculate the proper spoke length. Here's what I got so far.

Are you working on anything during the deep freeze?
I've often been able to lace modern hubs onto wheels by using the original spokes & changing the lacing pattern... Most wheels use a 3-cross pattern; I tried either a 2-cross pattern or a 4-cross pattern... (If the hub is larger than the old, the 4-cross pattern is what worked).
If all goes well, you'll have the spokes sticking out of the nipples where the inner tube is, & then you simply grind the tips of the spokes off so they don't damage the tube.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks to Venice Motor Bikes for the tip on wheel building. The original rim laced right up to a modern hub using a four cross pattern. Spokes are straight and tight with no protrusion through the nipples, so no need to trim. Will try a four cross on the rear wheel using the original rim, the original spokes and a vintage Schwinn drum brake hub. Building wheels in the house is about all I can pull off during this cursed Arctic Clipper. 18 degrees tonight, 22 tomorrow night, and 25 on Tuesday night with 14 inches of snow on the ground. Can't wait for decent riding weather to return!

Thanks, my insureanc only covers one ear, but the doc. said you would be supriseed. I sure hope so. When your hearing goes bad, you tend to icalate and stay by yourself, because you can't hear if the are asking a question or? And my hearing was not balanced. I had valume but didn't do much good, if the left can't balance to what the right is hearing. you start avoiding meeting's and the such....Curt
Curt, if that is a problem for you, read up on how to read lips and body language. Most of what people say is articulated through gestures, body movement and facial expressions and though you might miss a few words Im sure you will catch on quick! Ok here's a joke in sign language to get you started.

All the years I have had hearing aide, I have learned to read lips somewhat as a asistance. But to get people to look at you when talking is a bigger chalange, LOL. I got my last couple hearing aids at Costco they are around $1600 compaired to $ 5000 for other palces and free cleaning.
