Unless the jerk legislator intends to push through a bill outlawing bikes and motorcycles on public thoroughfares, it is still legal for them to be there. He, and other motorists, may not like seeing two-wheelers on the road with their cars, but that doesn't make it legal to hit them.
For years, Indianapolis was very much the same way. Motorists hated seeing bikes on the road. And they often used motorcyclists for target practice. I'm not often too fond of Mayor Ballard. But he at least recognizes that ALL residents need the means to get around. He's had dozens of bikes lanes put in, and asked for stiffer penalties regarding accidents between two-wheelers and four-wheelers. And he's been trying to improve busing with more funding, and the company - Indygo - has reacted with getting new buses and extending routes. In my opinion, they still have a way to go. But since I've joined this forum, I've seen a substantial increase in the number of cyclists on our roads here. I think things are actually getting better here.

I have it pretty good here. Lot's of nice wide bike lanes on the streets. Lot's of bikes on the streets too. All new streets have bike lanes and when older streets are reworked / widened, bike lanes are added.
Be sure to thank the spandexers for the bike lanes, they were not put in to accomidate me and the only other guy I have ever seen on a motorized bike here in this city of 80,000 people -

Memphis got a grant from the Feds a few years ago for bike lanes and the city now has an actual bicycle liason that helps with getting bike lanes around town. And Mike B is correct, we can thank spandexers for these bike lanes. Us spandexers are fighting for recognition of our rights to ride on the rod safely.

This just goes to reinforce something I've been saying since I was around twenty.
If you really, truly want to see things change, stop voting for old, white men.
Whoa, don't go crazy. Let me qualify that by stating that I am becoming one of them myself, which is why I can say this. When I was coming up on twenty, I wanted to see the world change. As I look towards 50 approaching, I want everything to stay the same.

I too am becoming a said Old White Man...I still feel and act like a 25 year old (and when I was 25, I thought I was old!). It reminds me of a quote falsely attributed to Churchill:
"If you're not a Liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a Conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.".

Sounds about right. Church and Twain... if they'd actually said everything everyone says they said, they'd still be talking trying to catch up. And in another thirty years I expect I'll want everything to be the way it was, as well.
I got reminded a couple of years ago that I'm not 25 anymore when I got my bike knocked out from under me. Somewhere between then and now I seem to have lost the ability to bounce.
When I was young, i was a liberal, the 60''s ya know...
In my middle age, when the daughter became a teenager, I became quite conservative...
Now that I'm retired, a grandfather and happily into my 3rd Childhood,
I have enough life experience to embrace being a liberal again!

I can't figure out if I'm liberal or conservative. When things are so stagnant that they just plain suck, it may be time for some change. But I hate it when they change for the worse.
