did my motor die?

for the past couple of weeks, whenever i would attempt to do a pedal start on my 2 stroke, i would hear very loud crackling noises. then today after i started it up, I rode for about ten seconds before i lost all power, I tried to start it back up but the clutch would not do anything. i wouldnt even hear the clacking noises from before. i pedaled back home to realize that the chain snapped off. now, the question is, did the chain snap because the motor died? or is it that the motor shut off because the hain snapped? any similar experiences?
 
I would first think the drive line is not correct. It's possible the chain is not perfectly aligned. I tried to start it back up but the clutch would not do anything. Possible sheared key. Loud crackling could be chain not feeding straight onto motor drive sprocket. First pull the 3 bolt clutch arm cover and inspect the sprocket condition and the key between it and shaft to be sure it is not sheared. Also look at the cover to see if any wear or gouging.
question is, did the chain snap because the motor died? Unlikely or is it that the motor shut off because the chain snapped? possible,Failures tend to snowball concerning these contraptions we love so much.
 
thanks for you replies everyone. so i went to buy a new chain today and realized the chain i bought was too small. I am not talking about the length of the chain, but the size of the links themselves. Where do I go to buy chain of that gauge?

Tractor Supply # 41 machine chain. Comes with enough chain for 2 bikes. also comes with 1 master link. $20.00 or so.. side note #41 chain is not compatable with the Chinese 415H kit supplied chain.

if it is not damaged from the sudden stop. by un hooking the chain and taking the plug out, you should be able to spin the engine with your fingers using the drive sprocket underneath the clutch arm cover. if not, you have damage to your engine, or incredibly weak fingers. there isn't much drag on an engine, if there is, something is wrong with your engine.
 
so i got got the new chain and after i put it on, i realized i am missing the rod that goes intothe sprockets. i think this is what the clutch lever presses on when you release it. i rode my bike to the store with the clutch cover off, this is what i get for that. Where do i need to go to replace this?
 
Hey guys, back again, I figured out the whole alignment issue and why the chain keeps falling off and what not. I realized that the motor keeps leaning to the left. the tension from the chain keeps pulling it to the left and downward to the point where the chain falls off and I cant even pedal because the motor is in the way of the bike pedal. I keep pushing it back into position but then the chain keeps pulling it back down within minutes. are there any modifications I can do, or modify the brackets somehow to actually make them work?!

As Allen said we need to see pictures, you hv to have the engine mounted solid, no gaps at either mounting point. The picture is my 24 “ with the engine mounted correctly, I took the picture with my iPhone.
 
very nice Greg! Picture this. I'm waiting for a long Z intake. This is an older engine GT5 rebuilt a couple years back. I in fact shortened the rear mount about an inch and then put a drum sander in my drill press to re shape/angle the front mount by hand so the engine would fit low and tight. That alum is very soft. Softer than hard wood and easier to work. This is a 26" NEXT Laholia spelling could be wrong I took all the stickers off.

thanks for the reply guys! here is what i'm working with. dont mind the extra chain with the clips that are blocking the head from view. that was my sad attempt to lock the motor in place. i think i know what the problem is from seeing your pics. it looks like the end towards the front wheel is poorly mounted(the picture with the green clip). it has a D ring that pivots pretty easily. let me know if you need more pics
