Cheap B@stard Dyno Build- HF79

Took the Whizzer clone tank off; I can't seem to get if to mount correctly- the Dyno frame has a very large amount of curve in the top tube and the Whizzer tank won't sit securely without kludging it. Also, the fuel barb is interfering with one of the canti tubes, so I'd either have to modify the tank or the canti tube, both are no-gos. So I'm going to be looking for fuel tank options; at this point I'm thinking either a juice can tank behind/below the seat, or some sort of moped tank.
Also thinking of swapping out the springer forks. Seems like this bike needs triple trees. Anyone have a lead on some cheap ones?
Can someone confirm something for me? When I created the engine mounting plate, I used the dimensions in the HF owners manual, and drilled the mounting holes symmetrical. Now that I have removed the tank and look down on the top tube, it is obvious the engine is offset to one side. The valve cover/spark plug is clearly offset. Anyone that has mounted one of these HF engines have this experience? I know what I have to do, just looking for confirmation on my assumption.

I'm just glad there is someone out there halfway interested in something I am doing! I always appreciate your posts about your projects, always interesting and informative.
So, back on being a Cheap B@stard...I am now back home and have some pics of the purchases I made this weekend. For those not following along, I went to the Trexlertown, PA Swap Meet today. It is a huge classic bicycle swap meet. Not huge like Carlisle or Hershey are to cars, but big enough.
I put some general pics of the swap meet in the General Discussion section.
Anyway, the tally is:
$10 WWII military bicycle handlebars
$12 Persons repop seat, brand new
$5 steel 10 speed handlebars (to make my intake manifold).

There were many deals at the swap meet. I ALMOST bought a Cleveland Mfg Roadmaster with springer front end for $60. Only missing seat. I kick myself for not buying it, but I really have to unload some bikes before taking on any more.

Nice scores... and I think you showed admirable, adultlike restraint regarding the Roadmaster. I don't think I could have resisted. And it had a springer fork, too? I wish we had such swap meets in my part of the world. Next year you can take some stuff.

Haha, yeah and now that I am searching the internet looking for a pic of the Roadmaster I am absolutely kicking myself! I think the bike was probably a pre-war Cleveland Mfg bike with all the original parts and the patina. Ugh.
The bike looked something like this, but with alot of stuff like the fenders painted instead of chromed. The springer was like this one, not sure what this type of springer is called? It pivots right at the bottom of the steerer tube.
Looking into this a bit more, appears the fork is called a "Shockmaster" and apparently there are some on the CABE that feel this is the best, most well engineered springer fork design.
And my lamenting gets worse....
note to self: when you continually walk around looking at all these cool bikes at the swap meet and find yourself 3 times back in the same place; looking at a really cheap, virtually complete classic bicycle, just buy it.

met a guy who could a bought a complete Vincent for scrap weight --did not know what he was looking at --when he went back --of course it was gone and so was the 40 thousand plus dollars he could have sold it for easy!!!

Took a small gamble today- bought a 1986 Kawasaki KD80 steel gas tank off ebay. Looks like this one (but crappier):
I had been watching another KD80 tank on ebay, along with alot of other small motorcycle and moped tanks. This one popped up and I had to buy it; $21 shipped includes cap and petcock. Of course it has some dents in it and I'm sure I'm going to have to de-rust the tank. I plan on trying apple cider vinegar to derust it. Hopefully the rust won't be too bad. It didn't look horrible in the pics and supposedly came off a running bike, but after recieving it I will post pics.
Fingers crossed this one will mate well with the Dyno frame and not be too big.

can also put a few cups of pea gravel in it --wrap it in plenty of heavy blankets so it stays pretty much in one place-with packaging tape in the old clothes dryer for a 15 minute tumble maybe when wife -girlfriend or mom is out shopping or at work!!! rinse with a little diesel or gas

From the local colage small engine class: How to derust a tank
Fill with water and about 1/4 of a container of salt. Put a plastic funnel in the opening( insulater) Take steel rod about 1/2" around Insulate the end that goes in the tank(tape or whatever) Hook battarie charger to it posetive to rod and ground to tank. Turn it on and watch the rust and stuff GO.............Curt

It is big. I wonder if it would look smaller in black. The blue really jumps out at you right now, or is that how you want it? You wouldn't need to gas up often. You might just need to use it for awhile and see how you feel about it once you're used to it.
