I was able to pick up a small ATV today for a WHOPPING $10!

It was a "Left in the woods" deal that someone picked up for me and I paid him for his troubles. This is going to be a fun time!







As you can see, the carb was full of water...






On top of that, there doesn't seem to be too much compression... I guess it will be an all winter project!
 
At that angle, i would be concerned about the oil sump pickup line being starved of oil. The Honda/Honda clone series motors are meant to be mounted layed down horizontally.

Otherwise, good score, even if for something just to tinker with.

I was concerned about that at first too, but from what I've read on here about the experiences with that, a slight to moderate angle won't adversely affect the oil getting where it needs to. Plus, once I mount it for real, it won't be at such an angle thankfully! dance1

Time to tear into this baby!

I am a bit worried about this pile of JB Weld I found underneath near the exhaust valve... Buuuut I will address that when the time comes



A bit nasty, but I can live with it.









All in all, I haven't seen too much trouble yet. The starter turns freely, the chain drive is in decent shape, and the valve springs seem to be alright. As far as the compression goes, I think I may just have gummy valves. But that is for the next day of work! .shft.

Could be some sticky rings, put some ATF or penetrating oil in there and let it soak for a while.......................Curt
 
I think I can do that. Shouldn't be too long before I can get it running! I hope, anyway... Just need to take the head off and figure out what the JB weld is there for haha
 
Check to see where the oil pickup is. I considered using a similar motor. The one I was looking at had the pickup somewhere near the front so that mounting at an angle might have starved it. I understand that stunt riders often modify these for extended wheelies or climbing to avoid this issue.
 
The oil pickup is at the front, but I think it will work out alright once I work out the mounts. I do however notice that the center of gravity will be brought up considerably with it. I can deal with that alright though ;)

I got the head off with no issues, the combustion chamber and valves are in good shape with little to no carbon build up. I do wish I had a make, model, year or SOMETHING on this. I found "79ml" Bossed on the side of the cylinder.... Any ideas? I don't have much else to go by!

79cc? Kid's ATV you say?

This is an electric start Lifan, or lesser known Chinese ATV motor. 50cc. Looks somewhat familiar. Common use is on a cheap chinese kiddie-quad.

79cc may refer to internal oil capacity. On spec, the Lifan takes .80 litres of oil in the sump. More often, the oil cap on the crankcase has capacity markings - stamped into the head casting is odd.

79cc, for an original Honda motor, in that stamped size/case/electric start/deleted kickstarter configuration .. nah. It's just not a Honda.

You can get limited spares for the Lifan's, if you know where to look.

1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter so 79ml = 79cc, commonly known as an "80" & these horizontal four strokes are extremely commonplace clones in everything from the 49 to 110cc displacements. Try searching "pit bike" or "monkey bike" parts in your displacement & you'll find they're extremely commonplace as well.

For service & repair, maintenance & rebuild it's the Honda XR/CRF 50/70/110cc horizontals that were cloned, Lifan is virtually identical so the Honda stock & aftermarket preformance parts all fit, even with the other clone brands most are close enough that the manuals are essentially the same. Unfortunately however as both the Honda and the Lifan are very prominently branded with the name cast into the side plate at the least - as yours is unbranded it's likely you've any one of the lesser known clones, which may mean less parts compatibility.

Not a big deal really, just about all the clones are very common, inexpensive yet reliable with the majority of the needful bits the same - best yet entire new engines can be had in the $250 range, there's tons of aftermarket goodies & used can be had cheaply indeed, as you've found out ;)

Wow, you guys know your stuff! I feel a lot better about this project now, knowing what it is. 79 is a good size I think :)

I have been pondering my mounting options, wondering if a few wide clamps might do the trick. (I would prefer welding brackets but have no experience with aluminum welding, though I DO know someone who can ;) )
 
I must have misread it at first... It actually says 72ml so I think it is just capacity. I am beginning to believe it is a 50cc though.. I am going to measure my bore and stroke tonight to find out once and for all :D
 
If it says 72ml, that is possibly a Honda motor, or more likely could be an off-brand clone like a kymco.

I'm most familiar with the Honda Passport C70 motor (they are stamped at 72cc's, which narrows this identification quest down significantly for me).

With yours having an ATV specific kick-start delete, it's otherwise definitely based upon that core motor. Honda C70 cub/passports had the electric-start option, with different LHS cases from the kickstart-only CT70 mini-trail's, and the Honda ATC and ATV 70's with recoil start, all sharing the same core Honda motor design, and obviously cloned by many chinese others since.

Do you have intact cases to photograph?

There is a site, somewhere, that actually has all of the more common clone manufacturer technical-specs listed as far as bore/stroke/bearing sizes etc, in order to half-ways identify the origin of an otherwise unknown motor, or to interpret/verify the sometimes dodgy chin-glish written 'manuals' provided. It's been a long while since i saw it last though..

I am excited to be learning more and more about this beast! I measured my bore and stoke earlier and does in fact have 68cc's of displacement


I forgot about Kymco, it has been a while since I've seen those in person!

My rings seem to be in new condition, plus I can still see hone marks perfectly through the whole cylinder wall. That sure is a relief! I may hone it lightly anyway since it's apart. I will be replacing all gaskets, so I plan on taking the clutch side cover off, too. Here are some pictures of my progress!

This is my unmarked side cover... I have taken the bolts out and am having no such luck getting it unstuck.

I found this gem inside the magneto cover. Not sure what it stands for, but it's the only marking I've found besides the badly translated sticker stating the break in process.
