I thought this chart would help some new to M/b building to select a better chain.

note the 410, 415, 415h all have the same tensile lbs. #41 is stronger.

It's strange that the #41 is stronger because when you compare #41 & #415 side by side, the #415 side plates usually look larger. (?)
 
I thought the 415 would be as strong as the 41, all the charts show 41 with higher tensile strenth.
 
If my cheap kit came with the 410 can I sub the #41 for it still with the 44t sprocket? The #41 is twice as wide. Sorry but I am a novice when it comes to chains.

Yes, on most kits the 41 or 415 will work. Some members have said that the chain will rub the transmission case, I have not had that problem.
 
I inherited a bike that needs the chain that goes to the motor. I am a complete novice. I believe it is a two stroke as it does require the mix of gas and oil. It looks like some of the bike pictures on the home page re the recent bike run. i.e., it is black with red rims. The distance between the sprockets on the motor and the back wheel sprocket is about 22 inches.

Any help on what chain I need and where to buy one would be greatly appreciated.

Homer, if you are unable to contact one of the very active MAB community members there in SD, go to one of our vendor websites that has a pic of the same motor you have and buy a chain from them... that's the ez way!

If you know the engine runs you can go with the better 41 chain, it is sold at just about any hardware store. If there is any question on the condition of the engine the cheapest way is walmart , kmart or target. Bicycle single speed chain will work on most, it will take two bike chains to make one mb chain. Walmart sells a chain breaker that works fairly well. Just lower the chain adjuster wheel all the way down and measure the chain, remember measure twice cut once.
 
Go to the top of the pqge and do a search, just type in what you need to know. You can find just about anything on mb's here. If you dont find what you are looking for start a new thread giving as much info that you can on your carb, which engine, new kit or broken in etc. good luck
 
you list that the 415 chain is only 1600 pounds tensile strength , it just depends on the manufactuer. i have a DID 415ER chain that rates 4090 pounds average tensile strength. its kinda spendy compared to other chains but i dont think breakage would ever be an issue with it.
to me its like spend alittle more, worry alittle less.
 
I agree, that chart is for standard duty chain. I copied and pastied it as I found it, It's just a bisic chart so people will know what standard chain will withstand.
 
yea, its like with everything with these motors and all the parts and upgrades, the key is reaserch, research, reaserch. before you buy...
 
Sooooo here I sit like a bird in the wilderness. I want to upgrade my chain to the strongest one I can get. I believe I have the 415 on my Starfire GT-2 48cc right now. Any advice??

i put into google "41# chain".
then switched from "everything" on the sidebar to "images.

then by looking @ the size chart you can figure out the sizes not shown.
ie: 410 & 415 are not in the pics. they do have the same length & pitch as 40, 41, & 420. they only vary by with.
so 41 is wider than 40,
then 410,415, and then 420.
 
i think i made a mistake in my sleepiness.
so from wiki i found this quite helpful
The first digit(s) indicate the pitch of the chain in eighths of an inch, with the last digit being 0 for standard chain, 1 for lightweight chain, and 5 for bushed chain with no rollers.

so our chains start w/a "4" so that tells us that it is 4x1/8=1/2

i just found this site that has anything ever to know about any chain for gears.

Since i have upgraded everything else on my bike, i set out to find the best chain i could find. I reaserched everything. Since i wanted to buy once and never have to worry again. I found the highly rated D.I.D 415ER 4090 Pound tensile srength. Probably way overkill for our use. but it is a perfect fit for the machined gears for like the MM hub adapter. Im more into quality and peace of mind.
Its not cheap but the best price i found is here if your interested..

This may sound crazy but #40 is wider than #41, #41 is wider than 415, #415 is wider than #410. The chart shows that in the width.
