I'm a newbie and I don't understand.....

... why I read through pages 2-27. I understood what you posted in the first place as the requirements to ride legally. Its really not that hard, people. Its all there on page one. Thanks for posting the info Bairdco. Much appreciated.

I'll be getting legal as soon as my bike is ready to be ridden.

When I was 14 my mom would send me to town on the tractor, I was really cutting a fat hog for about a year then the long arm of the law got me. No more tractor to town.Back to the motor bike , wear the helmet, watch for cops and you might not get stopped unless its a slow night and the cops need to give out their expected number of tickets.

Yeaaaahhhhhhh...no :)

"A motor scooter like a Vespa" is a motor-driven cycle. An M2 license is for *mopeds*.

From the DMV:
Class M2—You may operate any motorized bicycle, moped, or a bicycle with an attached motor, or a motorized scooter.

To California, a motor scooter like a Vespa is a small motorcycle. We have people all of the time swearing that a moped license covers a scooter. It doesn't.

Link: Motorcycle Handbook License Requirements
MrKai is right. M-2 is for mopeds and MB's and such with 2 gross brake H.P. or less. A 600cc bike. (or anything over about 49cc) requires a M-1. Now with a M-1 you can ride anything on 2 wheels. And as I recall, for some reason, there is no license requirement for a scooter, ya just gotta be 16 Y.O. I'll look it up to make sure.
fatdaddy.
Just looked it up. A scooter needs no registration and may be ridden with ANY CLASS license.
This is under " Motorcycles Defined" on the DMV site.

that's a nice page from Huntington Beach...

I've had no probs so far.
Don't want any, and ride to avoid probs.
Can't afford any! lol

if i DO have an encounter with a tax collector,
my position will be that I built it to exist below gubment requirements, for basic personal transport.
I'd tell a municipal clerk the same thing and advise him I'd appeal any decision he made other than dismissing the matter.
I would take exception to tax collectors interfering with my right to travel freely abt my own personal business when I am operating safely.

I feel the people of the country need this sort of option, and it would be good for the country. Those who experiment should not be hindered by a gubment in search of revenoo.
rc

I'll probly get the chance to tell em so. lol

You can buy all the parts ya want, just not a complete engine. Buying it this way could get expensive. You can always buy used, or new if you can find it, from a private party, Or find a relative in Oregon or Nevada that you trust and have it shipped there. (I don't have any relatives I trust, anywhere.)

Wow it just dawned on me how this has become such generic advice for many items banned or outlawed here in Cali.

Hey Barnfresh, The guy wants an engine. If you have better advice or have figured out a way to get 2 strokes into California,LMK. You sound like a little bit of an outlaw yourself so you might know that sometimes ya just gotta do an end run around things to get what you want. Since it's not illegal to ride a 2 stroke, just import it, in Ca. once it's in, it's legal to ride all day long.
untill the CARB regulations get straightend out, for good or bad, I see no other way except the "end run" thing. I guess you could pay double or more for a 4 stroke or even go electric. To me, Not much of a choice.
fatdaddy.
P.S. There's a guy on craigslist S.F. sells complete 2 stroke kits for $240 last time I checked. Not the brand the guy is looking for perhaps, But a place to start. I got a couple from him when he was selling cheaper. Just seems a shame when everyone else outside Ca. is getting them for a LOT less.

No that is sound advise you gave FD! It just hit me when I was reading it, the number of different items that require some form of end run around things in order to get here in Cali. From propane heaters to a simple gas can that you can still pour out of, and firearms to non-carb compliant 2 or 4 stroke what have you. You can get still get anything to want delivered right to your doorstep, you just have to work at it.

What gets me Barnfresh is that it seems ONLY California is doing this carp. You don't hear about the "NEVADA" air resources board or (name a state) ARB. California is a beautiful state, It's the people in it that twist it all up. When I was a kid it was THE state to live in. Now the Lib's want to protect you from yourself and the conserv's want to take your money to do it. And everybody is just, Oh well, I guess they know whats best for us. (SHEEP, is what we've become.) So, I'm just gonna do what I do untill I can't do it anymore, and try to fly under the radar.

It seems no one can get it 100% right. The article got most of it right though, untill the electric bike. With a certain size motor, (1,000 watts or less,) and no more than 20mph on level ground, is exempt from plates, license and insurance. If they would raise that limit to 30mph and batteries lasted longer I might go electric. But I might want to go further than 10 miles in a day, and I certainly want to do it faster than 20mph. A few of my bikes, if needed, could top out at around 45mph. I just can't ride at only 20, it just ain't right.

Hey Happy, Since we've been "chatting" back and forth like old friends, I thought I'd check out your album to see what kind of bike you ride. and OMG, NO ALBUM, NO BIKES. I realize it's off topic, but I just can't imagine a biker not having a bike. Could you show us some stuff bro?

Gee 'bro', maybe that's just because you haven't been around that long. I'm not into 'albums', don't look at them myself but heck the archives of the sites mentioned, if you're so inclined. There are other places around the web too if you know where to look. And I have a blog that goes back to 2008 where I've laid out all my thoughts on things MAB. I don't list the url here but just shoot me a PM and ask if you like and I'll send it to ya, though you probably wouldn't be much interested in the content. But hey, it's like my ol' grandma used to say, when you assume you risk putting the U between the a s s and m e. And thanks for your concern!
