With the exception of the XR750, Harleys are cruising machines, not high adrenalin machines. Ridden within their intended design they are tough to beat. Try to spank them through the twisties or race every throttle junkie out there and they will let you down.
 
One of the great things about this hobby is there is something for everyone. No prescription applies to anyone. If you can have fun riding down the street on a bike that only a toad could love, that's fine, the creation meets your needs. However, as someone who has been planted in the dirt and asphalt a number of times over my life, I think more thought should be given to safety as an element of performance. Not only do I want a bike that runs well, is fun to ride, and goes fast, I want one that will stop when I need it to, is comfortable to the point that I can enjoy the experience without walking bowlegged the rest of the day, and one that has minimal amenities like lights and fenders in case I get caught in the rain. In addition, I don't like fixing stuff on the side of the road so I don't want fuel leaks, loose wires, or parts that fall off. To me, these are all performance issues. Now, if I get a thumbs up, a wave, or as I get on my Whizzer all the time, guys stopping in the middle of the street to tell me how their dad rode one from Raleigh to Kentucky in 1948, all the better!!! The pizzazz is icing on the cake..weld

Amen. If the bike is not safe or not reliable, then to me it's a piece of junk. I want to get where I'm going, and I want to get there in one piece.
 
What this poll tells me is out of 48 bikes, 38 of them are ugly, and 10 of them aren't very fast. hehehe.
 
I am hoping that the new Solex build will allow me to putt at walk speed smoothly.

I want to putt around the neighborhood slow.

I want a bike that will run smooth at less than 5.

I like your style Mike.
Many years ago I had a Bultaco Sherpa trials bike, first gear was leisurely walking speed.

the bike can look great, but if it dosent work whats the point. its nice to have both

Yeah.....I'm all about performance, but I like they way my bikes look......both is best!

I like your frames Lance......a great foundation and your bikes look great! Wish I was made of money sometimes.........:D

Yeah I knew it would come to this. All of my bikes have one or the other starting out, but end up with both before long, so for us either answer is right.

A better question might be,

Could you live with a great bike that no matter what you do, is always ugly?

To answer this question my advise is, after what I married, next time I'd go for ugly, but we were, talking about bikes weren't we?

Performance and functionality is most important, to get it to work as planned is the main challenge. Performance may be different things. such as speed, reliability, fuel consumption etc.. But I like speed most!
