Got out yesterday morning before the temperature dropped and the rain moved in. Got 40 miles in between 3 towns in the Twin Falls area in a 2.5 hour time frame. Had to get a time frame of the travel time for work.

The first town was 8 miles out on fairly level ground and hit 25-26 MPH on the way into town. Heading to the second town...drove down the major highway with hills all the way. (Thought my legs would fall off.)

On the way back to my home...took another way home along some back roads. This trip was fairly level and had my speedo up to 31 MPH and 27-29 MPH for about 8 miles with barely needing to open it up. Seemed the HS had more power than I was expecting...with my butt and arms feel like getting the workout from that much mileage.

Do have two questions. I'm using a 44 spoke rear sprocket that was used on my 2-stroke last year. If I head up to a bigger sprocket to not wear out my legs on the hills around here...what size would everyone recommend/where would I get it from someone who might have it available? The more miles I put on the HS (keeping the oil changed)...will I get more power?

The funniest part about the trips yesterday was the station attendant asking where I was going to put the $1 of gas. She was amazed when I showed her when I got my .07 in change.
This is not my thread to barge in on but it depends on many things. First thing is what kit are you using and your weight your bikes weight and your area. If it is hilly or flat but most important if you have a qmatic you should be using 56 tooth or bigger

Kewl! I'll get another sprocket & get it put on there.

My experience is with Qmatic if you are near 200 lbs and hilly area your better off with 62 65 tooth sprocket that is just my experience talking
That will work! Will be a couple of weeks before I can get it.

While I'm going to be using a rag joint till I can afford to get a free-wheel replacement...will a specialized sprocket be able to hook up to the replacement wheel?

I'm around 200 pounds (haven't checked lately) and run a 64 tooth with the HS engine and Qmatic transmission. I live in an area with some formidable hills so needed a bigger sprocket. I started out with a 56 and the 64 is better for me. Power will increase as you break the engine in, but not forever. I understand that 250 miles or so should have it pretty well broken in. Change your oil. You'll like the bigger sprocket.

Hi Guys
Well I went on my first group ride in long beach yesterday it was awsome.
I had so much fun seeing all those bikes and meeting everybody so cool.
Even met the people that were bagging on me they were all great.....
So this was the first time I could compare to another kit bike..
About 50 bikes only 4-4 stroke a couple shifters . All in all a great mix.
So I started in the back of the pack because I am such a newbie . Then I decided to see what it could do so I cracked open the throttle and started to weave in and out of all that smoke and got to the front of the pack the front runners pulled over to wait for the slower riders . So when we took off again
I was ridding in the front of the pack with the built 2 strokes heads pipes
big bore kits carbs special manifolds race gas and oil.. But with all that my box stock Q Matic with quentons flex pipe and a 62 tooth rear .was just as quick.
maybe the fastest one was about 1or2 mph faster but he had to get into a full tuck to pass me so in turn I tucked and it was about even..It was a great time.
By the time we got to the first stop there was all ready 3 bikes in the chase truck thanks chase car drivers!!!!!!!!For being there..So Phoo. email me if you want the set up.. Thanks Flex.......This was just in my pack there were other bikes that could have been lots faster then mine just judging by the bikes in my pack....

Am going to get a 56 for right now...till I can afford to get a new free wheel and get something along the lines of at least a 70 or maybe an 80 tooth. Am around 250 Lbs and the hills aren't really bad around here (not anywhere close to Pikes Peak...except going into the Snake River Canyon)...so if I get the new sprocket & wheel setup at the same time that would be the best way to go right now.

Can always sell the 12 ga wheel/sprocket I'm currently using once I get the new wheel.

Hi phoobarnvaz,

about 98% of the Q-Matic owners use the 56 tooth sprocket.

About 1% use the optional EZM 60 tooth sprocket.

The remaining 1% use sprockets from 62 to 72 teeth.

If you have hills and or extra weight we suggest from 60 to 66, as the larger sprockets above 66] allow the motor to rev too high. The few riders that use the LARGE sprockets either pull a trailer, ride at average speeds of 25 MPH, or know not to run the motor at RPM levels above 8000.

I will list the speed numbers @7800 RPMs [red line] to help you decide on the correct sprocket for your use.
44 tooth 50 MPH [not possible, due to motor load]
56 tooth 39 MPH [not likely, due to motor load]
60 tooth 36 MPH
62 tooth 35 MPH
64 tooth 34 MPH
66 tooth 33 MPH

The stock Q-Matic uses the 56 tooth, and normally runs out of power at higher speeds [designed to hold top end speed lower to meet most state laws].

As the rear sprocket is increased the estimated speeds will be more likely to be true, as the LOAD is less and the motor is more likely to rev higher.

Have fun,

All of this is great to know. Not concerned with speeds above 30 anyway...just as long as I stay under the police's radar from someone like Buford Justice. More concerned with getting from point A to point B than how fast I can get there. Can always jump in the car to get there faster.

Thanks for all the help.

Not when yer stuck in traffic you can't.......so not always laffdance1

Man, I need more nitrogen in my tires.......was only hitting 34.6mph turning 7680rpm with a 56 tooth today......might be the new belt tho? Almost got killed twice by blind drivers in the past 24 hours.....I'm seriously gonna start carrying an AIR-HORN on my bike, so idiot drivers can SEE me from now on!

Used to have the same problem when I was living out in Arizona with those stupid snow birds...driving a car no matter what size it was. Ended up putting highway blasters on the car. Problem was...they can't see or hear whatever the size of the car. Too bad we can't project an illusion of a Sherman tank rolling over them to give them the scare of their lives.

Enough about why I hate snow birds. Buddy of mine got me a 56 tooth we got put on there...but the chain was too short. Ended up getting a chain put together we'll try out for size tomorrow.

Ain't it the truth though.....they can't all be deaf and blind, can they? Definetly blind for sure ....."oh, I didn't see you"....flashing red tail light and 200 lumens of blinding NiteRider light at night, not too mention a loud straight pipe exhaust. And in the daytime, lady pulls a cell phone out of her azzolee, same line!!! Flexman, we need 150db air horns mounted on H-bars.....muy importante! This comes before shift-kit upgrade, otherwise there might not be an upgrade for road pizza....

Quenton,
Regarding the information on sprocket tooth sizes you provided. I'm assuming this applies to the HS engine. What about the 79cc Greyhound? Would the recommended sprocket sizes be different?
SB

Hi Silverbear,

The primary pulley on the HF is normally larger. The HS & Honda use a 2" primary, whereas the HF uses a 2.5" [or adjustable].

The normal HF with the Q-Matic has a primary ratio of 2.06 X 1. The ideal ratio on the HF is between 11 X 1 and 12 X 1.

The HF motor idles lower and in order to have the special Max Torque clutch enguage the clutch must be spun at a slightly higher rate [2.06 X 1].

The numbers on the HF are:

2.5 primary = 2.06 X 1
Wheel sprocket 44 = 9.06 X 1 [way too tall]
Wheel sprocket 50 = 10.30 X 1 [too tall]
Wheel sprocket 56 = 11.53 X 1 [30 MPH @ 4500 RPMs]
Wheel sprocket 60 = 12.36 X 1
Wheel sprocket 62 = 12.77 X 1

As you can see the ratios balance via the primary drive pulley, and leave the wheel sprocket in the same range as the HS & Honda motors.

Have fun,

As always, your knowledge of these things is much appreciated. I don't know if you've heard, but Harbor Freight will be carrying a new engine, a 99cc "Predator" which appears to be about the same size (dimensions) as the 79cc Greyhound and is also low RPMs... just what you need to complicate your life a little more. Ha! Don't mean to sidetrack this thread, please excuse...

Just wanted to let all of you know I got the 56 put on last evening and got the chain put back on. Even was able to forgo the tensioner!!!

Anyway...drove it around town. The difference was night and day. Wished I'd installed a 4-point harness & a parachute on it before the ride. The power was amazing that I had to keep checking to make sure I wasn't going above 25 on the side streets I use. Riding into a 20 MPH wind on level pavement was an experience at 15-17 MPH...without any pedaling. Heading up a side street with an incline on the way home was amazing. Kept picking up speed.

Hopefully with nicer weather...will try it heading away from the Snake River tomorrow. That way...will pick up about 700-800 ft in elevation. This Q-matic is AMAZING and more so with the bigger sprocket.

Glad you had such a good time, Flex
Here is the first production Q Matic that was on the ride. See the number
stamped on the rear bearing holder?

Note the high quality stainless steel flex that has over 1000 miles without blueing, rusting
and looking funky in a few short weeks like yours.

Your bike looked great in person, it's hard to beat a build on a Felt

Just realized that there isn't any pics of your bike here
so here is one taken from the pretty side at the park.

My sissy bar busted today on a ride...so I bought a new seat...but it feels like I'm almost on the tank. Where did you get your seat post?

Love the look of this side of your ride. Just two questions...why did you go with black for the engine...rather than blue? I noticed that you may have had a clear cover for your Q-matic. Did you make or buy it?
