That is misinformation. The clutch engages at X RPM. Is basic physics. Reducing RPM before or after makes no difference. It spins when the spring is loaded to the point it elongates.The only down side of reducing before the clutch is there is that much more to move to get her going. The reason they reduced before the clutch on 1950's snow mobiles is there were no clutches that could idle at high RPM. The end result is the same. Make the drive turn and be able to idle.Hi weekend-fun,
Due to the many 49 CC 4-stroke motors at the PA event it soon became clear the Q-Matic was able to transfer more of the power to the rear wheel than other systems. The HF motor with the Q-Matic was one of the faster bikes at the event [except for my EZM prototype, and the Whizzers].
Because we run the clutch at slower speeds it doesn't eat as much HP.
