Using Bikes Original Shifters With Motor...

so i have not bought the motor bike kit yet but i was looking at a 4 stroke(49cc)(it will be my first bike kit)To get me back and forth to work(its only about 2 miles) and i thought if i get a 4 stroke with pull start(i would like electric start later on(maybe do something custom)) if i did not need the pedals to start the bike i thought i could just take all of the pedals and pedal bars off and put a sprocket off the left side where i can directly hook that up to the motor, and it would power the whole origanal shifting and chain system on my bike.Any suggestions or ideas?I really just want something where i have lots of gears to shift through. Thanks for reading(and or suggesting)

Welcome to the forum, you will be better served with a shift kit as Curt suggested, not saying what you want can't be done but will be a challenge for a first bike. Like Larry said don't overthink it, most start simple ad upgrade from there.

David Staton once had something similar to what you're suggesting. It had a 28t sprocket on the left side of the wheel and a 6 speed 14-28 freewheel coming off the left side of an 18.75:1 gearbox. Of course this was a rear rack mount. It didn't sell very well, so he discontinued it.

Here's a picture of my Sidewinder featuring a Staton Inc triple chainring shift kit. The reduction range is 66.79:1 to 16.25:1. All shifting is done with the left hand. Front chainrings are only shifted when in rear cogs (3) and (5). It gets shifted like this:

1(1-3)
Up steep hills and heavy load pulling.

2(3-5)
Around town general use

3(5-7)
Open road use

I agree with the others... Seeing that this will be your first bike build, keeping it simple will serve you better!

If you're a glutton for punishment?, a shifter kit on a 49cc 4-stroke is the best way to go; but the shifter kits are very tricky to install properly & keep adjusted (even for advanced bike builders). :(

I've been building these bikes for years & I prefer a good single speed bike over one with a shifter kit every day of the week.

I prefer to use the Ghost Racer 7G kit from GasBike because it has a real nice belt drive primary system.... Ghost Racer 7G T-Belt Drive V-Mount Engine Kit Special Edition With Hu | Gasbike.net

Spend $93.00 delivered for everything you need for a basic motorized bicycle. Then decide what works for you and what doesn’t. I am guessing that for a two mile ride something like this will be more than satisfactory.

Jackshaft shift kits are expensive compared to the motor kits - but for me worth every penny as I like to be able to ride up hill, down hill, slow, or fast and be able to take off from a stand still. I only use the pedals to start the engine and retain the "bicycle" status with the law so I don't get fined!
Installing the shift kit properly is definitely more technically challenging than the engine kit - but also more rewarding!
You will need to be a quite skilled mechanical engineer type to run the power through the bicycle gears without buying a shift kit - if you can imagine it, I say do it!
