I always liked watching speedway racing, problem was there never were any tracks close to me. I always dreamed of getting a bike and doing it, but age caught up with me and I have to settle on building art pieces instead. This piece is only about 5 inches over all.

Here is my Harley drag bike. As you can see I have a thing for two wheels and speed.. Now I just dream....

Very good. How do you make those wheels?

The front wheel was a roller wheel from a medical supply cabinet drawer and the back was a piece of hard plastic I had laying around the shop. I chucked it in my lathe and turned it to the shape. Otherwise they are made with scrap nuts, bolts, washers, cotter pins and welding wire.

Is MIG used? The weld wire mentioned?

The speedway bike was all mig welded. The drag bike was mig, tig, and gas brazed. I’ve got a home shop with all the welders as well as saws, presses, glass bead cabinets, drill presses and just about any hand tool one could need. The welding wire is filler wire for my TIG welder.

Great work, how long does it take to make one like the first? Anything I could build would look like a stickman.

Greg, I have anywhere from a couple hours to a full day on most all of my desk top art projects. I’ve probably built 50 different pieces over the years. Some I’ve given as gifts to friends, some where donated to silent auctions for special causes, and others just gather dust on my shelves.

Good job! Love how you captured the 'momentum' in your speedway piece. Impressive when using so few actual pieces in the sculpture. Keep it up and keep sharing the photos.
