I have been pondering the Kryptonite or OnGuard 14mm G70 (grade) lock deals on the bay.. The Krypto is made in Taiwan and the Onguard in China.. Both have 6' of chain and a fancy lock for about 100 bucks. Than I started wondering if the USA still made anything besides plastic bottles and other plastic things.. (If anyone knows of a killer padlock made here that will fit please advise) .. 16 trillion in debt.. Need to trim the fat.

So here is what I found.. 1/2" seems closest to the 14mm size used. 5/8" is also available in some places!!

The stuff ain't cheap but look at the length you get! so it is like 3 chains for the price of 1..

Keep in mind that this is G70 chain and that G80 and G100 chain exist!!

I went to Lowe's and got the heaviest steel chain they had. I asked for 3 feet of it, and it easily weighs more than a pound per foot. Its not getting cut by anything less than power equipment. I have a Fortress brand case hardened padlock with a one-sided key. case-hardening resists cutting. Almost any padlock can be cut with an angle grinder, but since my bike is always parked in front of my house or somewhere I can see it, I will always hear or see a thief trying to mess with it. No one has (successfully at any rate) messed with my bike as of yet.
 
Thanks.. Looking into this stuff. Glue some strips of steel belted radial all over the chain so anyone with a grinder will have a smokin' good time cutting it.
 
I've got one of those cable lock thingies for a firearm.
My mb hasn't wandered off when I park it.
Locks only serve to slow down a thief...

I use a braided steel cable lock, Kevlar wrapped. But I don't generally ride the bike to any destination where I'll have to leave it for any great length of time and, so far, I've always been able to park in the open where it's been well traveled and well lit. Most of the time I can arrange it so I can see the bike from inside, like through a window.

At home I have a small, windowless shed with a steel utility door on it, and a pretty sound lock. All the bikes, mine included, go in there when not in use.
 
I think I will be doing the same.. A U lock and braided cable together should be okay for stores and pubs. Maybe a siren hidden... Thanks. There are still New York style lock lovers that might like this from the regular MTB circuit.
 
For ultimate protection especially if you're putting together a $2,000 ebike with a bunch of other electronic components: http://www.mogotrack.com/products.html GPS tracking with a $200 unit, no subscription for just theft recovery. SMS alerts for location or speed, logging info, and live online tracking are subscription based, but very cheap.

Nothing is foolproof, but who's going to check for a lowjack before they get it to wherever they're going? =)
 
I'm going to break your hearts. A battery powered Hand Grinder can be had for under $ 50.00. No lock is a match for it. If you don't want to loose it, park it in your bedroom. (c)

Mine's in the livingroom :) And when I go for a ride I have a Kryptonite bike lock with the 14mm cable. About the only place I ride to is Wally World but there have been on occasion other MB's parked there and there is a security camera on the bike lockup.
