I see. Just thinking that would be the easiest place to insert the scope. That will be a pretty major commitment when you lay a drill bit and hole saw to the top tube!
You got that right. I think that's really why I've waited all summer to get started. I kept trying to tell myself I didn't need the gas tank to be in the frame, but really you just can't ignore the fact that if ever a frame was begging to be sealed, this is the one that's doing it lol.

Actually I'm a hole drilling devil anyway. My motto could be "Your hole is my goal".

I don't recommend painting that one on the tank (or getting it as a tattoo) as far as mottos go! Drill press or not, out of context it might make a few people..., uncomfortable! Im laughing though.

I bought a bore scope at harbor slave today so I can see what I'm going to be trying to seal.

And so it begins.

I took the front wheel to REI today to have them swap the front hub for me.

I don't have a wrench big enough to take the BB apart, so I ordered one from the LBS.

When I did my Twin my hands were shaking quite badly as I went to drill the pilot hole for the tank. I had to walk away from it and calm down before I did the deed. Your quite right about the inspection camera. Get a decent one and the HF ones are not well regarded in reviews. I got a good un on ebay pretty cheep. Never know when one might come in handy again and it was invaluable in being able to see down at the seat post. If you use steel wool to pack both sides of the seatpost ( I recomend it ) get the finest grit you can get.

Velodrome, what's this about steel wool. I haven't heard anyone talking about using it before. What is the purpose of using it?

I just waiting for the right mood to start drilling. I'm not worried about drilling the holes. It's the sealing process I'm concerned about.

There's no way I'm going to pour acid in the frame. I think that would ruin the paint. I don't see why the inside of the frame needs very much preparation anyway. It's new aluminum. I'm thinking about just pouring alcohol in it, and and then wash it out with water, and call it good.

Does anyone think that would cause a problem?

Take a look on the adhesive label for either compatibility issues or suggestions for what to use as a rework or release agent. Some adhesives are fine with alcohol, some not. If there's nothing on the tube/box, go to the website and look for the MSDS. As far as the paint goes, find use the plug you removed from the top tube to see if the alcohol makes a mess of it. Test a small spot just incase it does so there's more paint available to test if you can't use alcohol. Also, if you can find it and the cost isn't out of line try to get a reagent grade. No perfumes or other junk to leave a film.

I don't know if you've watched the tank sealing video made by KW Machine, but they recommend using denatured alcohol to clean the painted surface of the frame around the bung hole after glueing the gas cap bung on.

I think Caswell is expecting you're trying to seal a used, leaking gas tank though, and not something that's brand new, and never had any gas in it.

I would be much more nervous using acetone on paint than alcohol but then like I mentioned, try it someplace it won't matter as far as messing up the finish. I'll be doing my tank over the winter. The concern I have going forward will be the degredation of the adhesive. I'm not too excited about the thought of having gas or gas fumes in the tubes of my frame. That would also be the reason I am leary of using steel wool as that will burn too. Maybe I'm just a little too cautious but I only gamble when I know I am going to win!

I believe that you hit the nail on the head with that thought.
A used fuel tank would need to be thoroughly cleaned of any possible oil residue to prevent adhesion problems. A brand new bicycle tube would not have any oil residue in it. I bet 100% alcohol from a hardware store would be just fine for cleaning the inside of the tube.

I was about ready to start drilling today, but I ended up spending to much time collecting the root of all evil. Tomorrow doesn't look good either, so I guess I'm looking at the weekend. If everything goes according to plan I may have the tank sealed by Sunday, but that might be wishful thinking. Supposedly the Caswell is coming on Friday, and I'm also expecting a wrench that will allow me to take the bottom bracket apart. A big ole 32mm.

My anniversary is on the 20th. What an Idea, maybe I'll give this bike to my wife for our 37th anniversary. To bad she doesn't know how to ride. I guess I'll be forced to ride it for her. It's tough work, but someone has to do it.

I met her when I was in 6th grade. My best friend Bruce too. We got married when I was 22. Bruce was best man at our wedding. I usually can tell if I like something right away. If I like it, I keep it forever.

I like this Deep 6 alot. I could tell when I first laid eyes on it, it was going to be with me for a long time.



Same thing with the Atomic BB



But for some reason not the Cadillac. It never quite did it. I decomissioned it and turned it back into a bicycle.
