I'm in great pain; I hyperextended my left knee this past Saturday.

While walking my dog, I came across two of my neighbors (total strangers to me) hand carting a washing machine up a flight of stairs. They were thin guys in their 40's, maybe 5'6"/135lbs. I'm 70yo/215lbs/mostly out of shape.
They were in trouble; the guy pushing might have gotten injured. I tied up my dog and RAN 15 yards across the lawn to help them.

It was an easy assist; they were grateful. Sixty seconds later, I was walking my dog again.
My left leg felt funny. I got home and took a nap.
When I woke up, I was in excruciating pain as soon as I stood up!
I just KNEW I hyperextended my left knee, inside ligament, probably from running on uneven grass.

I'm in great pain(9 of 10) walking any distance on my left leg. When I drive, sit or sleep, I'm painless if I'm positioned correctly. Moreover, if I crouch and drag my knuckles, I can walk for short distances. Pain level drops down to 1 of 10.

I took two days off and returned to work. My boss asked "Where's your crutches"? My sidekick rolls on the floor when he sees me dragging my knuckles at work. "No videos on Facebook, please!"
"Government worker shuffling along at work", it might say.

My wife and daughter both said I shouldn't have helped. "Look how injured you are!"
"I'd do it again and again. The guy couldn't gotten killed or injured."
My son-in-law said he would've helped without thinking or being asked, just as I did.
He's 28yo/6'2"/strong.

I have no regrets.

My wife's insisting I see the doctor today. I know what he'll say. "MRI first. Then "Sir, your knee is hyperextended. We'll order you crutches and muscle relaxers."
"Would you like medication for your pain?"
F..k no.

What would you have done? Look the other way, and keep walking the dog?

Time heals. No pain meds needed.

The doctor said it's a strained hamstring. It'll heal.

I got my first set of crutches ever.

Yeah, I'd do it again.

I hate it when people don't want to get involved, if it doesn't involve them they look the other way. Sometimes just a kind word is all it takes to help, sometime a little help like 5-7. A couple of years ago I pulled up behind a lady stalled at a traffic light, she was in the left lane and having a panic attack on what to do, I stopped my truck back a ways to help. I had her put the car in neutral and started pushing her into the hash marks of the left turn lane, another guy saw what was happening and came to help. It wasn't a big deal to me but was a big big deal to her. So I have done it and will do it in the future.

I used to save cans an bottles to bring to recycle for cash. Today I ran to catch up with a guy that collects. I caught up with him as he was heading into church possibly for other recycle. I handed the bag of recycle to him. As I walked away an old guy in a car parked there saw me and smiled. I feel that was worth it twice over!

I really am enjoying this thread! Some really great people here. Obviously a kind of eccentric group if ya think about it. Folks who take perfectly good bicycles and strap motors on 'em.

If not out of necessity, than it takes a unique sort of mind set and a thoughtful person. Not the kind that has a bike and a car so problem solved. The kind of thought process that looks at their bike and says "hmmm"

I make jokes but really is the kind of person I enjoy. Just half a bubble off plumb. But to the good. (or crazy depending on perspective)

Just saying you folks are a blast to hang out with.

Had a passenger the other day. (I am an Uber driver on weekends) Good guy who works with kids. I'm taking him to work and is a long ride. So I offer to hit the drive threw at Dunkin Donuts. He is surprised at the offer. (Uber drivers make .7 or $4.20 an hr for wait times) Not like the 5 minutes is gonna kill me and he is a good guy.

As he buys his breakfast and me a cup of coffee (came right back) he asks how much. The woman in the window says the car infront of him paid and that it had been going on for 2 hrs! We both were like "Wow" for the rest of the ride.

Just really cool.

I gave him a magnetic card to here and hope he joins us. Would fit right in.

Eric, our new host had those cards printed up. It's our logo on magnetic biz cards. If any one wants a few, just pm me your address and I'll mail em. Their (there?) pretty cool.
Eric is a good guy. Just sayin'

lemme know.

Yep, this is a good group. Have had the pleasure of meeting a good number of the "wingnuts" over the years. The Central Pennsylvania Rally is quite nice and Silverbear and Fasteddy have stayed here with us. I have found virtually all of these folks to be kind and generous people.

Really well said, Other Brother Dan.

First time I caught on to that, I was at a rally. I felt kinda "less than" as I was the only China girl rider among some really nice Whizzers. (sp?)

But as my bike self destructed on a long ride, we all stopped and jury-rigged her and every one stopped to help. Taking her off the car, 4 people reach to help.

LoL, we stopped and drank lunch. My tank loosened up and my muffler guts fell out. So I am ridding along, holding my tank up with one knee and alternately singing (I want to ride my bicyclehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjD-HoC5UUc&feature=youtu.be ) and screaming "Not infront of the Whizzers!" lol
(Vid is actual pics from that day, mostly)

Did I mention we drank lunch? snork.

I think this kind of community spirit, or willingness to help others is slowly fading away from our modern society. There are still many of us out there but each generation is offering less and less. Sometimes it seems that people's first reaction is to take a selfie with the unfortunate incident in the background rather than offer assistance.

I'm guessing that many of us here remember as kids growing up we knew everyone in the neighbourhood. Those were good times. Nowadays people tend to keep to themselves and think only of themselves.

I still stop to help if I can, it's just the way I was raised I guess. And I remember when people stopped to help me.

Dan, obviously I didn't find the correct spot for the "pm" I sent. I had the old website pretty well figured after all these years, but not this one. Anyway, now that my name and address are out there all you guys can feel free to send money, gifts, etc. anytime you want.

Back with the subject at hand. I certainly wasn't raised to be generous and helpful, unfortunately, but I think my stint in the military did a lot to open my eyes and it certainly changed my attitude about things in general. Some times I have gotten in over my head with the getting involved stuff, but it usually turns out for the best.

Dan, howz about you pm me and maybe I can figure that stuff out.

Wherever we lived, my wife made it a point to strike up a conversation and get to know everyone in the neighborhood.

I must humbly beg to differ Chaz. Well, to some degree. With out a doubt, kids be selfish, yo. (Snork) but was said when we were young, too.

I sincerely think kids are now inundated with the horrors of the world via social media, intertubes and global community.

“The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.”

Socrates
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/63219-the-children-now-love-luxury-they-have-bad-manners-contempt

They [Young People] have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things -- and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning -- all their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything -- they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else.
(Aristotle)

I don't think they have it easier.

Not being disagreeable, Chaz. Or meaning to. Just my thinking Buddy.

Dan, sorry I haven't figured out how to "Quote" a reply.

Anyway, I am delighted to be ensconced in such elevated company as Aristotle and Socrates. I'm sure you've heard the saying: Great minds think alike.
They were truly wise men and spotted this trend ages ago. There was a philosophy professor who branded me "A rogue philosopher" and I wore that label proudly.

I am a bit jaded by the years but I still hold out some hope for the humans.
