49cc 4 stroke engine wont start... what do I need to do?

I have a few questions as well, i'm very new to all this and have very little mechanical experience.

6 months ago the engine died on me all the sudden and would start back up when I would try. Since then, I gave up on the bike itself until this week since I'm wanting to get it fixed again. Unfortunately, I left gas sitting in the tank all this time, as well as it being in the lines that run to the carburetor.

1. What exactly do I need to do to troubleshoot the engine problem?
2. Where is the spark plug located? I cannot find it, and heard this could be the problem?
3. What replacement parts should I expect to buy? I feel as if leaving gas in the tank this entire time will create some problems.

I would go to one of the vendors and get a new tank ,fuel filter, fuel line carburetor and plug..spark plug is the white think with the black rubber cap and wire,

You don't say which 4-stroke you're running. However, when troubleshooting all engines you have to check for gas, air and spark. Some 4 stroke engines have a low oil sensor. Check your oil level correctly. Since it was running and all of a sudden stopped, check spark first. If you feel uncomfortable try to enlist some help. Basically you locate and remove the spark plug, reattach the plug wire and lay the threaded portion of the plug against a metal portion of the engine where you can see the electrodes. Then pull the starter rope. You want to see blue/yellow spark jump across the electrodes of the plug. If no spark, then check the kill switch. Simply bypass it and check for spark again. If still no spark, then I would suspect the coil/CDI which is the "box" where the opposite end of the plug wire is attached. The CDI/coil is generally under a plastic cover. Parts for Chinese 4 strokes are readily available and reasonably priced. In 6 months yes your fuel will be stale. You can worry about that when you know you have spark. Make the effort to locate ethanol free gasoline. Then use that in all of your small engines. It's possible your carb is gummed up in 6 months but I doubt it. Hope all this helps.
