my needs are not speed but reliability and torque for steep off road hills miles away from help if a breakdown should occur.

i have a GIANT made 25" frame non suspension mountain bike for a start and a $500 budget.

open to 2 or 4 stroke systems.

recommendations please.

BIG thanks

up north now
Two stroke kit with a 48-50 tooth sprocket will get you where you are going.

I can ride in my yard at a fast walk with a 44 tooth, so the 48 or 50 tooth should be fine.

A 2 stroke engine kit and a heavy duty shift kit from www.SickBikeParts.com
would be under your budget and climb hills like a mountain goat.

I have a Honda GXH 50 and man, it is a great and uber reliable engine!

Starts like it wants to run and really smooth. I think it is well worth the $.

It sat for at least a year if not 2. Cleaned the carb and it started first pull.

HI,

FWIW - We can go up to about 124T on 1/2 pitch chain....You should be able to climb most anything w/ gearing that low!.....Actually, you'd probably run out of traction or flip backwards first.

thanks Andrew, that's excellent.

the plan is to ride up the hills and quietly [no engine running] ride back down them.

2 stroke is also a good route, simpler and more angle resistant [no oil pan]. can always upgrade to higher 2s quality motor later.

there is also the possibility of towing a small trailer.

For ride low, ride deep in stealth mode, have you considered electric bikes? Or a hybrid.

I have never owned one (yet) and don't know how they do as hill climbers but would be quiet.

Now am thinking a e-pusher trailer. Really dunno if that would be a good choice for you. Just typing out loud.

Hybrid or pusher trailer and motorized bike? LOL, think I talked my self into another project.

Taking the needs into account, a 2 stroke engine with a reed valve seems the best way to go, offering better low end torque than a straight piston ported engine. Also, if you have no restriction on cc apart from the weight and size, something bigger than a 50 will be good as it will be less stressed under load.

It needs chain or toothed belt drive as well; friction from a roller or plain belt will disappear when they get wet.

I'd survey your options about availability of suitable engines and what engineering facilities and manual skills you have and then decide.
