I always enjoy pictures of cute girli's and surf (even if its cr*ppy surf). But...

What a thread to personally spam in! LOL

Hey WM, did you by any chance read this whole thread? Tell us what in the picture of the cutie & trike you custom made?

If that is your daughter, then we can at least give you credit for being able to procreate.

I got no reaction (in this thread) from my long winded diatribe about trybrid etc...sooo..(at least this ones not watermarked)
and aaahhh this one IS resized...the original would push the page to 4 monitors...LOL!!!

I bought this bike "Mostly" finished...however I engineered the rear seat attachment from scratch.
as well as the keyed ignition system. Various other subtleties....

Also...per my wifes request...(that's her in the picture) this tricycle will soon be also electric powered. which (of course) will cause me to subject you all to yet another round of "Look what I can do"...from yours truely.

On topic with the thread...really guys...in the 80's the chevy nova was a rebadged honda accord...the toyota matrix and pontiac vibe were the same car as recent as a couple years ago.
It's not only nearly impossible to have a completely original product....it's nearly impossible to have an original THOUGHT....think about it.

And yes...I've read this entire thread...some parts twice.

PS...thats surfers point ventura california behind her...one of the nations...perhaps worlds...best set makers. it's just further away then you realize in the shot I think. theres a guys catchin it to the left of the bike in the shot.....most pics are riddled with surfers and kite surfers. every single day...rain or shine...these guys are hard core. their funerals are called "paddleouts" (we literally "paddle out" and spread their ashes.)

I think what is developing is called a "cottage industry". I guess we should be happy, since all our jobs have gone to china, that some folks can make a job out of assembling chinese stuff and putting their name on a business card.

Look at this guy for example: (Helio bikes). He has quite a racket going. "Only $599, complete bikes available and free shipping." His bikes look pretty good, and if you buy a built bike it has the clamshell hub adapter and good stuff on the bike. But unless you want a bike-in-a-box like he got, drop shipped to you probably, its more than $599. http://heliobikes.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&c=2

The Russians had this all figured out. Even when they were bogged down under soviet era communism, they were pumping out ready-made moped bicycles, and apparently they are so ubiquitous that no one blinks an eye at them, even half a century later.

Do you think US will eventually have a big-corp that assembly-line builds mo-bikes? Will they be worth a poop? The American buyer is used to just "taking it back to Walmart."

I wonder how it will go with the mo-bike industry here.

Wm, wm, wm, I've been using the term tribrid on my blog since 2009. Need a link or have you already seen it, lol.

Oy! Really quite simple if you don't block it out, just follow the theme of this thread but another hint: an original product is one you make not just assemble.

Just playing devils advocate...where do we draw the line?
did you make the steel? in my foundry...
ok did you mine the ore? in my backyard...
do you own the mineral rights? no...

then it's not yours.

yes i have a lathe....am i going to make every screw just because I can?
**** NO!

Just sayin...

I really love the rolling art work we get to appreciate here and want nothing more then for it to continue.
The trash builds....not so much.
But even the chain saw motor guys bring food for thought to the table..trlrl.

again...the line.

you've been using tribrid in your blog since 2009...I believe you.
I was FLABERGASTED when "tribridbicycles.com" was not already taken...
so i bought it.
Not an original thought.
But it's mine.

.trlrl.

Going back to the manufacturer/assembler argument. Across pre 1939 Europe, most small "manufacturers" used bought in components. They may have had to stamp out some plate, or send out for castings occasionally, but they mostly bolted bits together.

This thing about buying bits in and putting a name on then is nothing new. All you have to do really, as a buyer of a complete machine, is to look for the name with the best reputation. The rest of us have to go out looking for unreliability.

Ludwig is very correct. I'm reminded of the early Frazer-Nash automobiles of the 20s and 30s. You could order one with a Blackburne engine, or Anzani, or Meadows. I think you could even get a J.A.P. engine for them. They bought their wheels from outside suppliers and goodness knows how many other assorted bits. But they assembled them in their own unique way, and sold you your Frazer-Nash. Even Rolls Royce bought engine parts and other components from outside sources. Some factories made gauges and sold them to car makers. Some made cylinder blocks or sleeves. Duesenberg sold expertly crafted AND assembled running chassis - and then you went and bought coachwork for it. But it was still very much a Duesenberg.

PS: I just realized that there are a small handful of vehicles out there that were far more in-house construction than the vast majority of others. The Model T Ford leaps to mind. They made the engine, the chassis, the bodywork, the seats, the wheels, the radiator, the dash and controls (but I don't know about the gauges) and painted the thing on site. I think tires were one thing they didn't make; many had Dunlops or Firestone NON-SKID. And batteries - I don't know where Ford got them.
These days, even the Big Three have formed multiple alliances through time. Some Fords have Toyota parts. Dodges have (I must admit) excellent Mitsubishi engines. GM gets bunches of minor pieces from China. (And yes, so does Harley Davidson. Indian is more American-made now.) The Model T, the Volkswagen Beetle, and a rare few others are all we could view as "mostly pure". Throwing stuff together in the best-working way possible and sticking your name to it has been done longer and more often than anybody is comfortable to admit.

Peanut Tank?

Heck, I just used what I had known of and used a Briggs & Stratton Plastic tank and made brackets to hold it on the frame. Looks was not so much the thought as anyway it will eventually get a art cover for parade use. Other times it is crossing streams, mud, and stuff for it has no pedals and is licensed as special motorcycle off road.
