Hi guys.
My name is Memo, I live in CHicago and I loved the motor bikes since the first time I saw one.
I abused my status as new father to ask to my wife for a special present for my,,,,,, The chance and money to build my own one.,,,, and I got it!!!!!!!

I got a Phat cycles aluminum byke and I order a 48cc Skyhawk G2TB engine that I didn't received yet.

I really need your help because I don't know nothing about this build, but I really love the motorbikes.

I need to know where to start from and what parts tu upgrade even before starting the build.
if you can share links or direct ideas will be great.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.
I'll post some pics of the bike latter to see where I did started.

Hey Memo, I'm going down the same road as you, but took a slightly different route.

I picked up an older, ratty-looking Whizzer and will be tearing it up eventually to build a boardtracker replica. I'm going to spend a while learning about them, riding my bike, & seeing what upgrades I need (brakes, suspension, power, etc) before I start building. I can enjoy what I have while I learn & accumulate the parts I need.

Not sure if there are many MB'ers in the Chicago area, but we know there are two of us now. It would be nice to have a local group to share ideas with and help each others with builds.

Anyone else from the Chicago area interested?

HI ghosteh,
I didn't see many motorbikes around. there are tons of add in craigslist for already build ones, some for tons others for almost nothing.

I got the small engine 48cc because of the rules here in Chicago, I believe that the maximum not to have to register it is 50cc.

if there is any local help will be great. so let see how many will answer.

I wouldn't worry too much about the size. I don't know a single cop who would measure the displacement. If you were worried, you could always put a sticker on a motor that was for a smaller displacement.

Funny, I saw a MB in Hoffman Estates this afternoon. It was the 1st one that I've seen out.

Welcome to the forum ,this is the right spot to find out everything you need to know.
I rep. The shop dogs in waukegan a riders builders club . There are a number of riders around , first get yourself on the member map ,then find yourself a mentor here on the forum and have at it . The list of prebuild is great reading while you wait for ups to show up. And just a little lurking around will find almost any answer you may need to fix up any thing with two wheels.
We go on regalar club runs all season both around heer and in wisconsin, we just had the borderland rally a few days ago.
So lett me know if you need some help or advice or if you wana meet up to ride .
Enjoy ,this forum is a great bunch of guys...

Thanks for your good wishes.
I just received my kit yesterday and I got into problems right away.
Engine is used, not only bench tested but used. it shows signs of wear and also some deep marks made by a chain at the sprocket area.
the screws have narks of being forced in and almost lost treads
The tank came with a big dent in one side.
the sprocket has a to small opening for my bike hub, I have an internal shift one.
I'm posting some pics of my bike and set.
Thanks

Sounds like that kit wasn't advertised accurately! That sucks! But don't worry; anything can be repaired or replaced, and building anything is one giant learning curve. I wish I had the skills that I see some other guys have, but I'm fortunate enough to know a little, and to have some great friends who enjoy helping out. Knowing where to go and who to talk to is often the best way to get ANYTHING done!

Prussian: I'd love to hear more about the group and any events & runs that will be happening. PM me and add me to the list, and I'll definately make an effort to attend. This is a fun little hobby! I'm enjoying my MB as much as my Harley! :)

hey there...I'm also in Chicago (Logan Square) and very new to the motorized bicycle community! I recently bought a Schwinn bicycle with a
40cc motor. I've ridden to work (5 miles each way) the last 2 days and I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I"m addicted and thought I'd join this forum. I thought it would be a good idea to take it in for a tune-up, since I just bought the 1 year old bike. The other thing is that I've noticed it leaks a good amount of gas over night. Might have something to do with the tubes and where they connect. I'm just learning things, so don't have all the lingo yet.

Who did you purchase the kit from? I would personally be on the phone or emailing them with those kinds of issues...

Sounds like fun in the windy city!

One thing... I would NOT put a sticker on that falsely stated displacement with intent to deceive and enforcement agent. That, is a crime in itself. Kinda like giving them a false ID ???

I'd sooner tell them "I bought it because it was represented as legal here."

Operate responsibly and you could never have an encounter of the costly kind.

Have fun!

Welcome dr. Bob ,lose the fuel line that comes with the kit! Hit a good hardware store or lawn mower place and get some real fuel line. And hose clamps.
This is a great bunch of guys and the chicago area group is growing fast. Please fell free to ask about anything and be sure to poke around ,theres a ton of info. Enjoy.

Hi Guys,
I just return from a vacations on Galena, Il. Good fishing there but no action on my MB.
I just got a set of upgrade studs and a front mount to be worries free.
I also got an idea from Mr. Al Fisherman aka Ron on how to opend the inner circle of my sproket, it came in a standard size and i need it big, 2" because of my HUB being a internal shift one. I'll be borrowing my uncle bench drill to do it and sabe some bucks.

I'll post some [ics as soon as i learn how.

Hi Dr. Bob,
I'm new in the MB but I'm building my own after shecking the prices for the already built ones that they sale on craigslist her in Chicago.
Also you should upgrade the studs as everybody does it before is late and you need to fix them. Just read over the coemnts and you will see what is this about.
As the Prussian coments, get advice from the pross and first of all get fun.

Hey, about the leaking.
If you didn't replaced the lines as the pross advice then there is the problem. you really have to replace some stuff for security reasons before even start the engine.
If you bought the bike form somebody thet just wanted the fast money then you have a very standars low grade tubes, studs and screws. will be better to upgrate them before getting to replace a full piece.
I'm new too but i spend tons of time reading the posts and learning.
let me know if you agree with my post.

It might be a felony in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, but here in the Chicago area, I can assure you that the cops could care less what sticker you put on your bike. The only possible way that you'd ever get in trouble is if you were doing truly stupid stuff and attracted negative attention. THEN they might decide to tune you up by getting you for every possible offense you could think of (and even some you couldn't imagine).

And putting a sticker on your engine that has a larger/smaller displacement is absolutely nothing like presenting a false ID to a cop! rotfl
Think they are going to check the bore & stroke of your engine and calculate the displacement during a traffic stop??? haha!
