Finishing the Greyhound Build!!!

I ordered mine from Maxtorque. You have to disassemble your clutch and replace the heavy spring with the lighter one. Not a hard job unless you can't find your snapring pliers. I think Quenton has some springs also.
Looks like that will make a really nice looking bike. What kind of tubing are you going to use and are you going to weld or braze?

I can't remember if I posted this here but I have used spray paint can lids to slide on springs. Struggling trying to get one back on one day looked up and on the shelf was a can with a sort of point on the top. The rim fit perfect in the valley. Basically just rolled new spring on and pried the cap off with a screw driver. Worked great. Sure, using the right tool....

That should be good info for hf builders.

Do you think that motor, your build would benifit from a multi speed system? Are you satisfied with the power for hills etc. Seriously thinking of using that eng for my next build this winter.

Me and the bike weigh 319 lbs. I do not need the pedals to start and it climbs every hill around here and some are steep. If I pulled a trailer and still wanted to go 30 I might need multi speeds but it suits me fine the way it is.

When you say it starts without pedaling, is it a little boggy or does it go NOW!? As in, you feel it
in the seat of yo' pants.
Also, on the hills you mention, what kind of speeds/RPMs and grades? For example, right now I'm running the HF
52cc pump motor with cvt and it will pull my 300+lbs (bike, rider, load) up our bridges at between
25-30 MPH depending on wind. Again, does the 79cc start to bog at your gear ratio or does it pull strong?

Just trying to find out the 'sweet spot' for gearing. Thinking of going CVT or 2 speed.
A CVT would get me ratios of say, 20:1 up to 8:1.

It pulls off from a stop with no hesitation but not tire spinning in anything but sand. I have a hill leaving home at least 10% and it slows down to 23 or so going up, another guy with a Honda 50 cc and one of the trans sold on this site with a cent. clutch and a belt primary wont pull the same hill. mine will leave him from a stop too. This said, I will not argue with anyone online about whose setup is best, I am just telling what mine will do.

I just re-read your build thread and wanted to say how much I appreciate what you've accomplished both for yourself and also for everyone who has read and been inspired by your work. Thumbs up! The basic idea of two frames joined together with two BBs and all the room in the world for an engine is just a great idea leaving room for all sorts of innovations. There are no doubt already second generation builds using your ideas and then a third generation will come. If this forum ever had a museum of milestone builds, your flying dutchman should be one of them.
In the many details you have generously shared there is one that I imagine others have wondered about but been more discreet than I am. I have learned along the way that my builds always end up costing more than I wanted them to or had budgeted for. Aside from found items, the same kinds of things others of us could find, too... what did the build cost roughly? A breakdown for those considering a similar build would no doubt be helpful in deciding whether or not to do it. We already know that if you watch the sales the HF engine is around a hundred, but what about the other items that are needed?

I didn't really keep up with the cost.
79.00 HF engine
50.00 ? jackshaft sprockets and #41 chain

80.00 handelbars and seat (the seat is comfortable and also the bars, I had used
but the seat hurt my but on 30 mile or more rides
and also the bars gave me pain on long rides.)
65.00 tires & tubes You need good tires on something that will do more than 30mph!
? 2 rattle cans paint
free machineing on bearing adapters for jackshaft
20.00 bearings for jackshaft
389.00 Call it 400.00 for odds and ends added that I have forgotten
The rest was stuff I had laying around or picked up free.
I probably have forgotten some stuff so don't shoot me if you see something I have forgotten.
Good to hear from you SB, I trust everything is back to normal with you and Anamoosh(sp?). WC I hope this is of some use to you.
By the way I had to redo the motor mounts, the first ones were too thin, the parts between the aluminum motor mount plate and the frame cracked. I replaced with some heavy square tubing I had and no more problems.
I have started another build, a tadpole recumbent trike built mostly from GreenSpeed plans. I have 2 more HF 79cc that i got at dirtcheap for 50.00 for the pair and will try to mount one of them to the trike. It will certainly be a challenge. I also got a 6.5 hp HF engine for 18.00 all it needs is one of the gas tank mounts brazed on. Don't know what I will do with it probably use it on a lawnmower.
I forgot 40.00 for Maxtorque clutch and light spring.

Thanks Dan. I finally got my computer back from the repair depot so I am back on the board now. I have decided that I need a trailer for the Flying Dutchman. I am starting to build it and will post some pictures later today.
