Spooky Tooth Cycles is proud to announce tentative plans for the annual Death Race, with a twist...they want YOU to make the plans for this wicked jam! dnut

To further show appreciation for all MB riders, the location of the event and possible after-party, will be chosen by you. .wee.

The date has been chosen, however: Sun April 19th.

Location should be in/around the Tucson area, lowest traffic routes with pavement throughout.

Keeping in mind, previous races have already been held at Gates Pass, Mt. Lemmon, and Saguaro Nat'l Park:
Death Race 2005: Spooky Tooth Cycles - Motorized Bicycles: Gas Powered and Electric Bikes
2008: http://motorbicycling.com/f35/death-race-2008-promo-754.html

If you can think of a good place to hang out and party (and brag!) afterwards, throw in those ideas, too.
Submit your "idears" (OCC) in this thread, and all input will be reviewed by Spooky Tooth Cycles. The winner of chosen location will receive an autographed thong, worn by Evel Knievel. haha ewww!

MAP: tucson, az - Google Maps

LET'S ROCK.

Re: SpookyTooth Death Race 2009: YOUR input requested!

I'll go first.

in my opinion, a good mix of utilizing torque, top-end speed and endurance, would be a route from Oracle Junction to Mammoth.

total distance is 32 miles.

the elevation difference between the two towns is only 200ft, but there are some 5300ft hills to go over and down again. thats around a 3,000ft climb. thats a lot, when you consider most of the climb happens in just a few miles

EDIT: previously, we went up to 9,157ft in 24 miles, from 2,400ft

What about Reddington pass? lot's of fun ups and downs and once you get past the shooting range near the entrance you don't see many people. It's all dirt so anyone racing would want to have some good knobby tires.

Man this is a lot harder then I thought.

Here is one ideal but I am not too sure about how heavy the traffic would be on Cortaro & Thornydale & Tangerine

Start: (Arthur Pack Reg. Park) West Overton Rd. & Thornydale

South on Thornydale to Cortaro Farms Rd.

West on Cortaro to Silverbell

North on Silverbell to Twin peaks Loop Rd.

West on Twin Peaks to Sandario Rd.

North on Sandario to Avra Valley Rd. (Careful, Avra valley police dept. right on the corner)

East on Avra Valley Rd. to I-10

Then North on Frontage Rd. to Tangerine

East on Tangerine to Thornydale

South on Thornydale back to Artur Park...about 32 miles.

Allright, I did not mention this one cause I thought it was boring.

Start at the Pima county Fair Ground go south on Houghton...Turn Right on Sahuarita and finish at Sahuarita High School. About 20 miles

A little ways out of tucson

Start Arivaca Rd & I-19

If I remember right its a kinda twisting road, ride that road all the way to Arivica, about 25 miles. I just do not remember whats in Arivica.

those are some good pics.

the overton/thornydale one...that may be a little confusing for out-of-towners. i got dizzy just reading it :).

that sounds like a good one for a rally. slow, and all together

Re: SpookyTooth Death Race 2009: YOUR input requested!

Low traffic and pavement? I gotta think about that ...
Starting from Spooky's Tucson headquaters... a west side loop like Fairracing's idea is more practical . But for scenery and grade changes I like the climb up Campbell Avenue or Hacienda del Sol from River to Skyline and Sunrise Road to Sabino Canyon road(refreshments). Sabino Canyon to Tanque Verde Road then east to to Agua Caliente Park (refreshments by the warm artesian springs).
Then, either a long straight run south on Houghton to the dragstrip/fairgrounds(refreshments time trials?) maybe even to Corona de Tucson(refreshments/fuel) or from Agua Caliente, a more urban westward cross town return ride on a decent bike lane equipped street (Glenn or Pima) with lots of refreshment and gastronomical possibilities... :D

.rd. WoWee i just am going to have to save up and come to arizona. me and friends here were thinking of having one in penticton b.c. following the triatholon route 110 kms over 1 moutain pass--but here they are ilegal we have to sneak around like criminals- however it actually makes it more fun.

do that!

another idea i had, is Oro Valley to Oracle. 22-23 miles. i like the idea of staying on one road, because when you're flying at an amazing, blinding speed of 40mph rotfl and your goggles rip off your face, its tough to watch for street signs if you dont know where to look.
plus, we'll have a support vehicle for broken bikes :-||.
with a route that has a whole bunch of turns, someone is going to get lost. and possibly left out in the desert alone.

Re: SpookyTooth Death Race 2009: YOUR input requested!

I don't know if a location has been decided on yet, but what about starting at Robles junction / Three Points and riding to Kitt Peak? some good long straight road and some climbing too. Would be just under 30 miles. Maybe we could rally up to the top and race back down?

Here's what the route would look like: from: robles junction to: kitt peak observatory - Google Maps

Try having a dice run, have riders pay 5 or 10 dollars to enter, winner takes all.A dice run is when you stop at diffrent locations and roll 3 dice, your points are written on your score sheet and they are added up at the last stop.HD

Re: SpookyTooth Death Race 2009: YOUR input requested!

Robles Junction to Kitt Peak turn-off sounds scenic-wise great except for the crazy drug runners like to blast down or should I say up that road. I used to live south of the junction and unless we're in a big group with armed escorts I wouldn't consider it at all. Sorry guys, but with all the drunkies, junkies, fugitives and meth monkeys, Three Points has left a bad taste in my mouth. Someday I'll tell of the night a Border Patrol bus was threatening our lives on that highway one dark night. If I had my rifle that night I would have killed every agent on that bus. My blood boils just thinking about it!
Count me out, except as a heavily armed escort out there.
