Ok, let me start with this was my first mid drive build. I've built many hub drives before.THIS THING IS A BEAST!!! I've got a 48 volt 20AH LION battery with a 3 speed hub. Is loaded with bottom end. Snatch your head back. Top speed is about 20-25. It could get alot faster with different gearing or maybe a 7 speed hub. I like being able to climb hills over top speed. 25 MPH is fast enough. I did a few modifications to the kit. I added some front aluminum braces to the motorbecause this thing has so much torque it wanted to pull the motor toward the cranks. May have been ok without them but wanted my motor to stay more isolated. I also added a LEXAN chain guard so my pants leg wouldn't get caught up in the chain. I have to say I love this bike. one issue i've been having is that freewheel sprocket on the motor it has a threaded retaining ring that holds the bearings in the sprocket it's been coming lose an drops all the bearings (un-noticed until to late) even with medium thread loctite 248, only way so far that's stopped the issue is high strength loctite 263

if you are interested how, take free wheel sprocket off motor clamp adapter into a vice use a center punch in one of the 2 indent holes an hit it with a hammer clockwise it'll come loose, remove it then clean both threads an add loctite an tighten it back up, leave for at least 24hrs.......

hope this helps an possibly prevents you from having any issues like i've had...........

I'm not a fan of mid drive, but I can appreciate your nice clean build work. How fast can you pedal before spinning out?
 
Nice build, I did the mid drive and ride it everyday. Have 8 speed rear and pedal assist to double the mileage. Great mid drive set-up for sure...
 
I want to put an 8 speed hub on the rear but not sure I can lace it up. I have done it one time but it was years ago.
 
I think I will leave everything the way it is. This has to be best motorized bike I have ever owned. It goes from zero to 20 mph in about 3 seconds. Its smooth and powerful! Climbs hills like a tank! So, my review on the SBP 48 volt electric kit is a 10! DONE!

I am strapping in a SBP 48V system on a 24" ladies 24" Micargi Tahiti 3-speed bicycle...

And powering it with a DuraB 48V 12Ah LI removable battery pack with it own built in BMS and charger already in it so you can just plug in to any common 115 AC outlet using a common appliance cord to charge it.

Ya, SBP rocks and that will take most anything, but it looks like it is being powered by a 24V kids riding toy battery.

I'll bet they have fun with that, for like 5min at a time hehehe ;-}

Hi guys, I'm just starting to look at building an e bike. So a couple questions if you guys don't mind.
Someone on here said they didn't like mid drive motors, why?
What does SPB stand for? There are several other "letters" that are always in the adds for motors and batteries. I don't know what those stand for either. Letters that seem to accompany the voltage and watts.
Is a Nexus 3 speed workable? what about more speeds ? I'm not a fan of derailers and will be building from scratch probably. I may just buy a frame. I'll want to do some welding of brackets so I don't want a nicely painted frame, if you get my drift. I can strip one, of course. then repaint.

Before you start commenting on my ability to scratch build, I've built a lotus 7 sports car form scratch. frame, suspension, and body work. Its real nice too.
I built a regular bike a while back and laced in Strumy Archer hubs myself as well. I'm much older now, but the last wheel I'd laced, I was 12.
I do a bit of fabrication work. I weld/braze, I have a machine lathe and a mill. I'm a furniture maker by trade.

But I need to research the electric stuff before I start.
So thanks in advance for any help getting started.

SBP = Sick Bike Parts

I notice in the original build the flange of the FW is on the outside. Standard set-up is 44T chainring outside.
