Is there any need for the long tubes on the stock air filter?

You know that plastic cover on the stock air filter?

I'm talking about this thing:

I know that the tubes on the back let in air, but is there any reason I can't just saw off the tubes so that there are just holes there? I had to modify the front mount on the motor and because of this the air filter just barely clears the bike frame(this is caused by those tubes being in the way. While my current setup works fine, I'd rather just get rid of those tubes. They seem rather stupid.

You can cut them off, or maybe flip the cover upside down?

I cut mine off straight away for clearance issues.

The tubes make the bike a bit quieter, but you can remove them.
