HELP: making custom exhaust from scratch

i am trying to make my own straight pipe... can i use a piece of flat metal for the part the bolts directly on the motor? does it have to be a special piece of metal or just any piece?

Raw metal 1/8 at least. I use 3/16 for my flanges.

What part of California are you located? I can make you a nice exhaust if you are local.

Ok, in school i have 1/8 inch thick, and 1/2 inch wide.. i can drill the holes for the screws to mount it on the motor correct?
i live in the Oxnard area.
