Electra Townie

You can do it Charlie Brown!

With all the great stuff people build here on MB.com, wheels should be no problem for you guys/gals.
If you are a bit mechanically inclined building a wheel can be done.
My first front wheel took me 3 times to complete.
MP3 was super easy because of the radial lace pattern.
Most hubs motors only really need 1 cross and that's real simple too.
Its the 3cross that starts to get a bit busy.
It gets easier the more you do, just like most things.

Take your time don't rush it, evenly tighten the nipples, count the turns.
I go 3 turns. Have an example on hand.
Not to sure its any cheaper, at least for me. I like to use somewhat good quality parts. Butted spokes are $1.00 each and double wall rims are $30-$70 or more, plus the motor/hub used.

Spinningmagnets started a thread on ES for building wheels.

I thought you got super powers from a lightning strike to the head.
If you could channel that power into the hub....
J/K. wow SB lucky to be alive!

Yes, indeed, lucky to be alive. It has been almost 20 years now since the hit and I'm still waiting for the super powers thing to kick in. Nothing yet.

Re: Electra Townie 3 speed electric conversion

I have an old Electra townie 3 speed. I saw motors mounted to the peddle sprocket. The bike is all aluminum

1.Would I have to lose my 3 gears?

2.Would it be better or possible to change to 7 speed? I am Disabled and need this type of transportation please advise me. Or should I find a old 7 speed to convert?

Internal 3-speed, perfect for jackshafting so don't lose your 3-speed hub function, you can let you engine use it too ;-}

Your just bolt the back of your engine to a SickBikeParts.com jackshaft shift kit and you are set.

Gears change everything ;-}
