Chain METAL snapped.

So i've had my bike with the stock chain running for probably 11 months. Its been through summers and winters. Today i was riding and all of the sudden a huge WHOP and a smack on my back. The chain flew up, slapped my back, and flopped around. i quickly turned around back to my house (instead of continuing to my girlfriends...) and inspected the chain. I originally thought the master was loose or something but upon further inspection, i saw that a random link had literally snapped. not the pin, the connecting flat metal piece just tore off.
Is this normal? i have a 49cc china girl on a 26 inch bike, the chain was not too tight, it had about half an inch of play on the top (the long stretch):-||

seen that a lot - most likely chain flats climbed up on point of teeth, then twisted while trying to pop down

I've had that happen with the stock chain too. It didn't slap my back though. I switched to #41 chain and keep an extra master and half link with me now.

Yup, it happens. Had a stock #41 (?) chain (or whatever big size the old grubees came with) snap once, whipped around and knocked a big hole in the case.
