They were 2 way centrifugal, like the Cub engines. There was a lever as well to allow disengagement for the purpose of pedalling.

I'd really like to make a powered wheel. Beyond me right now but am learning

Just a thought. A big old alloy motorcycle brake drum is hollow. There's a concentric backplate as well with lugs and bolt holes. Just saying.
