Big bevel gear question

While replacing my clutch pads, I noticed there seems to be a large gap between the big bevel gear in the clutch and the "Clutch Base Inner Race". Is this normal or has the big bevel come loose a bit?

I would assume that it needs to be tight against the Clutch Base Inner Race so that the pads can grab quicker. Any thoughts?

Good guide for adjusting the clutch, but did not address whether there should be a gap behind the big bevel gear or not.

I'd be interested in what you found out, Greg.
Popped my cover plate today to inspect my clutch pads (greasy), and the ring gear the clutch pads are in is quite loose. I'm wondering if this can be remedied with new ball bearings, or if there are shims or something back in there.

I thought I'd ask before tearing it up!
