2 stroke oil how to measure

Choose your ratio. As a newbie, I used 16:1 as the kit manual said. Most people recommend less oil than that now.
In any case, a gallon is 128 ounces, so if you want 16:1, just divide 128/16=8 ounces oil to 1 gallon of gasoline.
If you want 32:1 it's 128/32 = 4 ounces oil.
40:1 is 3.2 ounces, which is why you'll see 3.2 ounce bottles of oil in the 2-stroke oil section. You pour the 3.2 ounce bottle in a gasoline container, and then add 1 gallon at the pump and you're done. But you don't want 40:1 for break-in.
This would be an easy way to get a 20:1 mix, which might be a good break-in ratio. Buy the 40:1 oil and only add 1/2 gallon of gasoline.
Or buy a 6.4 oz bottle of oil and add 1 gallon of fuel.
I hope that made sense. In any case determine the oil you need and buy that amount and use the whole bottle. Then you only have to measure the gasoline, which is easy to do at the pump. Doing it this way helps mix it as well.

If I could add a couple more details. If you wanted to make one gallon of 32:1 gasoline to oil ratio you would use 124 ounces of gasoline and add 4 ounces of oil to that to make 128 ounces total. You will have to compensate for the amount of oil that sticks to the inside of the bottle, and use a 2 gallon fuel container to give you room to mix that good. You could also use a Mix Mizer Syringe to measure the correct amount of oil. Thank you.

Dollar store - 4oz plastic baby bottles- one measured 4oz bottle one gallon gas. Keep it simple always best.

Get yourself a 1-gallon gas can & do what Allen said.... Pour 4oz of 2-cycle oil into 1-gallon of gas (& shake it well).
This will be 32:1 mix

Don't worry about making it come out to exactly a gallon after mixing, etc. Just add 8 ounces to the first gallon for break in, and 4 ounces per gallon afterwards.
Once mixed, you need to use it within a couple weeks. For that reason you might want to just mix a quart at a time. That's what I do. I use a quart oil bottle to mix it, and a 1 ounce (2 tablespoon) coffee scoop to measure the oil. One scoop for 32:1 or two scoops for 16:1.
And if you can find ethanol-free gasoline, use that.

But seriously, since he was asking about break-in, would you recommend 32:1 for a break-in mix?

Yes... I've been using 32:1 for break-in for many years. (& don't use synthetic oil for the break-in)

Same here! 30 or so bikes later none broke so no probs with break-in. There is way too much thought put into this by some.

I totally agree!! (way too much thought into it).
I think once you have several builds under your belt, you just have the confidence to fill up the tank & ride the pi$$ out of it for several miles! (It's the old school 'break it in fast' & it will be fast theory)

been using 1.5 ounce per gallon for like 20 plus years in anything 2 stroke, seems to run the best for me. lately been doing daily 80 mile round trips @ 120 mpg. cruise 25/35 last top speed check was 43. no plans on doing it again. Runs good from idle to top speed I just cruise it and make sure it runs good at wot just not take it there.
