2-Stroke Heart Attack: Metal in Combustion Chamber

What happens when there's a bit of metal in your engine?

Apparently, your engine will run for a while and then give up.

That little blip in the top of the picture is a piece of metal. Looks about the size of a pencil lead (about 2mm diameter). It's been crammed between the piston and wall, but I'm not sure how far down it goes.

I didn't have time to further inspect (I had to run and get my other bike) but I think it may be possible that it's the pin from the carb.

It seems like the little metal bit had been in there for a while, as the head and top of the chamber are very badly dinged. It looks like severe pitting. You can get an idea of this in the picture (see how the sides are reflective but the head is matte?).

I noticed a strange ping (almost a ringing like a bell) a few weeks ago, but I thought it was a vibrating fin (when i held something against the fins it would quiet the sound).
I can't get the thing to budge now (as I would expect) and I think she's a goner, but I'm going to order another engine tonight. Nothing wrong with having a few spare parts.

Anyone else found presents inside your engine?
Any speculation as to what this is?

Same noise happened to me then engine seized-when i looked same thing-at 3000 miles-its the wrist pin clip from the piston.
