Just finished painting the two straddle tanks for the aforementioned machine- no, it is not an actual 1912... but it is inspired by the 1912 Harley Davidson. Here is the right tank-

Here are the mounts- I will have to re-position them as the engine sits too high- or I might scrap and re-do for 4 stroke

… once you get rid of the kit mount... THAT is fitted 1/4" flat boilerplate, soon to be trimmed & welded into place, once I figure out the mounting holes. Notice the cut-out for the forward gear.

AAAHHH That's better! It will sound a bit more authentic as well. Thats a nice build you got going on there. Loose that muffler box and you gain a bunch of room.

Top & bottom to answer your question.

From a welders perspective the tube is really thin and the plate quite thick so it's a bit tricky to weld without blowing holes in the tube. If you bevel the two notches in the plate to a knife edge (top & bottom) & weld both sides, top and bottom in two passes, each side (top & bottom), while directing the great majority of the heat towards the thick plate; you will avoid burn through on the tubes while still adequately penetrating the thick plate.

Tig would be the best for this, but Mig is ok also on gas. Flux can be a real challenge for home welder's on operations of this type.

- thankee much- I am working with a gas 'pony' rig, so that's good to know.
