There's really not a whole lot left to it. One of 3 things is going to happen. He'll sign it and it will become law, he'll veto it or he will do nothing and on Aug. 5th it automatically becomes law.

My guess is the latter of the three. With all of the focus being on the budget and everything that that entails this would be a rather minimal concern to anyone in the governors office. I can only see him vetoing it if he tries to get some type of fee established to them whether it's a special plate or just a public transportation typed sticker similar to off highway vehicles like atvs and such for state owned parks.

As long as the veto doesn't happen, we will be legal in the eyes of the state within 3 weeks. After that it will be to keep an eye on ordinances at your local level, they can ban them on their own. It's not really going to change a whole lot from the way it is now.

Those that ride worry free now, still will. Those that have gotten harassed and told not to will still get stopped, only until it is changed at the local level you will get a free pass. Something tells me those in this situation need to check any local ordinances on bicycles. If they can't get you for riding they'll try to get you on eqipment violations or speeding. Reflectors/lights at night and the such. Hopefully it will not come to that, but if they don't like them now they probably won't like them anytime.

I really can't tell you an official status, but I have yet to be pulled over. I've had one officer really take notice, but he was riding shotgun and the driver didn't notice. I've had a friend at work ask a Jerome officer about them and he told him that I was perfectly fine. I've never asked myself due to not wanting to bring the attention on myself. I figure they'll pull me over if they need to let me know it's not allowed.

I ride on the side of the roads and use left turn lanes when needed, I really don't hide on the side roads but I try to stay on the less populated roads if and when possible more for my own safety. Never ridden on the sidewalk and obey all stop signs and lights. I'll pedal across red lights when I don't have a car to trip the sensor. I've ridden on Mac Arthur, Chatham Road, N. Grand even went through the middle of downtown a few times when riding back and forth to a friends house. I've rode by just about every local law agencies and a state trooper without incident.

My throttle broke on my way home from work Thursday, got it super glued now and operational but don't trust it. I have a billet throttle on the way from overstock but they shipped it standard when I paid next day so it won't be here until Tuesday. Not sure when I'll be able to ride for any length of time. Considering taking up a 2nd job for a few months. Let me know whenever you're going to try it and I'll see if it fits my schedule. When I first got my bike there was another older guy that rides a rack mount, now I have seen 2 other frame mount cruisers around my general neighborhood.

thanks for the response cls74, when I do plan the trip I will let you know a week or two ahead of time. It would be good to see a face with the name. I would love to get a MB rally going.

Here is a link to the new law from the Illinois Compiled Statute.

You would be in violation only if you ride motorized on the sidewalk, or you are going faster that 20 mph on a roadway.

Illinois General Assembly - Full Text of SB0236
Just to clarify, that is the wording shall it become law. It has not actually been signed and introduced as a law. Should be within 3 weeks though, just don't want someone that may get harassed or ticketed to think the law is in effect now.

It is 60, not exactly sure when the 60 started though. says sent to the governor on 6/5, not sure if that is when the clock started or if it would be a day or 2 after. 6/5 was a Friday so possibly 60 days from the following monday or tuesday? I would also assume that it is 60 calendar days and not business days. Once it is passed it should go into effect immediately being that it is ammending a pre-existing law and not so much a new law in and of itself.

The house had 30 days after both sides got final approval to send it to the governor, the governor then has 60 days to sign or veto it or it automatically goes into effect.

Looks like Quinn signed it yesterday. It's officialy a state law. Posting from my phone so not putting a link, but if you check the status it has a link to the public act on the last update.
