What is funny is he never said "say good night Gracie', it was always "Gracie, say good night" and she did. So, she never said "Good night Gracie".
It has evolved from to telling her shut up now, stop talking (She talked a lot), the show is over, to our generic US term for your finished, done.
I like to use "Stick a fork in (it, me, them, this) it's done".
For a the new generation, you may have your own new such terms you will use when you get old, but if you want to relate to our older generation it helps to know the classics of our generation ;-}
