Normal people don't know what they are missing! You are not rambling at all, it's greaf talking on the thread. The quote from the movie is flattering, my brain is currently thinking that I know something better than bolting a China girl to a bicycle. I am figuring out possible jackshaft and placement to bolt two China girls on a bike......

After having twin engine thoughts rolling around in my head for a few days. I have been really looking at dimensions and fitment. As much as I love my China girl, for the twin engine build I think I am going to use pocket bike engines. They make these little 50cc two strokes for them where the carb comes straight in the bottom of the crank case. They are extremely compact and for $159 dollars a piece they are rated at 5.5hp. I have a few ways to mount them in my head that will work.

Checked out and commented on LabRats build. It's definitely awesome. I have been hunting the actual dimensions of the 49cc pocket bike engines I plan to use but can't find them. It isn't really that critical as I will order the frame and engines and have to fab quite a bit anyway. I guess the biggest reason for the question of overall size is to make sure THREE of those engines won't fit in a SkyHawk frame ha ha ha ha ha :)

Not exactly a Bonneville racer but my first build is coming together. I am really enjoying working on this motor and can't wait to get it broken in, expansion chamber installed, tuned and see what it can do.

Well the first shake down ride went about a half mile and i found out how crappy the chain that came with the kit was. I knew they were bad but I mistakenly thought, if i lube it, get it nice and straight and baby it I can break the motor in with it. Wrong. Oh well I have it together and ran the motor. It's quite cold out and did not want to start. Got some sputtering with the choke on and then it started to pull it's own weight. Had to turn the choke off to get it somewhat running. Dealt with a vacuum leak, still might have a small one then turned the choke off and it was kind of four stroking. Brand new motor so i didn't want to cold seize it so i cruzed around the neighborhood at very low throttle and never really got to open it up at all then the chain broke. More to come, when i can get a good chain.

LSR, was the chain tight and how is the concentricity of your rear sprocket? They should not brake or at least I have never had one do that.

Tension, alignment, and lubrication were all good. I had gone thru it pretty well because i had read many stories of people having the chain break first ride, my thoughts were "well they probably didn't install them right" ha ha i guess karma might have broken it. It was supririsingly concentric the way i had mounted the rear sprocket direct to the hub worked great and very solid and round. All that being said I am suspecting and hoping it's the master link so i can throw one on and try to ride a little more while waiting on a good chain.

I have been looking at the Salt Flats and a lot of the classes and competitors. I really hope to find a way to run there. I think I can find ways to make the tech inspectors give thumbs up. I formerly road raced middle weight super bikes and Mazda RX7s and getting the former thru tech can not be worse than a bicycle ha ha. Anyway I hope we can get enough interest to have several of us out there. I am pretty confident I can get some decent speed out of a CG with some more development and experience. My friend just reminded me of one of the death machines we built years ago. We got 57 miles per hour out of a 3 horse Briggs, I wont admit how or what it was bolted to however :)

Pat Dolan who is on here as Sportscar Pat and sells bikes and parts he and his brother make.
They race at Bonneville. Their ad is on the side at the top of the page as Sportsman Flyer Bikes and Accessories.

They hold a land speed record and if you click on the Google search at the top of the page and type in sportscar Pat or Sportsman Flyer you will get information as to how to see all the pages. They went through the inspection and talked about what they needed.
You might try getting in touch with him for information and they sell frames that will pass the salt flats inspections.

Thanks Steve. I have checked out the work the Sportsman Flyer people have done. It's great they have been paving the way, the work they have done will be a huge help to those who follow. I need to spend more time studying the rules and what the sanctioning body will want too see. We will most likely build a frame in house. We have built an FSAE Formula car frame, a Ducati engined motorcycle and countless race bicycles. I have in my head something for the CG engine layout and my dream is to get that safe/legal and run that motor on the salt.

Hi LandSpeedRecord,

You're certainly well equipped to build the frame. I've seen a lot of people talk about building a bike to try the salt flats and I usually point them toward Pat and his brother since they have already been there and are doing it. I just sit back and dream.

Last year was a wash out with poor salt conditions so here's hoping this year is perfect.

I have a shot of them in my phone at speed on the salt. It's quite inspirational. The Salt Flats and the Baja 1000 are the last things on my motorsport bucket list in life. And now i got bit with the motorized bicycle bug and think running it on the salt will be a dream.

Hi LandSpeedRecord,

Such is life. Just as you think the bucket is almost empty someone comes by and fills it up again.
I keep hoping that I can meet who ever it is because I owe then dinner and a drink. It's made life so much more fun and entertaining.

Steve.
