Does anyone reconize this engine

This 2 cycle engine was given to me. Has a 5/8 x 1" output shaft with no keyway. It had a small fuel tank attached. What mfg? What HP? Who made it? What was it used on? Has a tillotson carb,

Looks like a Jacobson maybe 2hp they also made 3hp I have one of each.

RickRides would know if you get a hold of him..................Curt
 
I'm looking at that asymmetric fan shroud in aluminium, and the PP is the nearest I can find. I suppose you could always hunt around vintage mower forums.
 
You may be right Lud as i am no expert just thought the head looked more Jacobson. There were a lot of engines made back then Clinton, West bend,and who know what else.

I have spoken to the wider world. You never know, somebody could have 2 of the things and know all about them.
 
I will look into jacobson, west bend & clinton.
I have feeling it was on an old chainsaw(despite it's size) or perhaps a pump. Due to the short output shaft. Looks like I will have to machine a keyway to attach a sprocket.

Some of the difficulty in pinning it down is there were so many American companies making engines in the 50s and 60s. The quality of that metal looks 1950s for a start. The crankcase reed, belatedly taken up on motorcycles years later, goes back to the 50s as well. It's certainly a beefy unit, is it about 80 - 100cc?

There are a couple of people now on Farcebook trawling sites to see if they can find it. I looked at Elgin, O&R, Johnson and more, with no luck. What's the name on the air filter? Is it a dealer name, or just a manufacturer?
 
Don't believe its a West Bend. I looked them up last night and though very similar the recoil housing appeared to be steel in most if the pics.
 
Pretty cool. I found a similar unit by a different manufacturer at a yard sale a few months back. Used a later US 820. Was used originally by the Ga. DNR in sensitive areas where thy did not want to disturb the environment/water with an outboard. I didn't venture the $200 price to see how well it worked.
 
What bugs me is it sure looks like Power products engine,but the Power Products has kind of flat head and Russell's has a domed head with rounded fins.............Curt
 
It might depend on the age and the model. The Dragonfly is in the right shade of red, if we could rely on the colour of it being a sound indicator.

As it's cleaned off, it might reveal a serial number, and that should tie it down to model, year and probable original use.
